About this deal

Oh, hey there, champ. I heard you're selling mudflaps after today. Is that true? Hey, you put me down for the first case, okay?"

A lot of the names are from Isaac Asimov's short story "Sally", which is about sentient (robotic) cars. All of the vehicles in the series appear to have their windows completely opaque and blanked out, and no convertibles nor any vehicles without roofs actually appear (the vehicles that do resemble convertibles always have their roofs up), and it's heavily implied that they all may not be hollow.

Books:

McQueen's name gets some confusion though as people believe he's based on a famous race car legend. He's actually named after Glenn McQueen, a Pixar worker who died during Finding Nemo's production. On his right door, there is a picture of the Marshy-Marshmallows logo. This is mostly the same company that was seen in A Bug's Life under the name of "Joel's Marshy Marshmallows." Tears of Joy: By Sally as Lightning helps The King cross the finish line and is praised by everyone. Repeated Cue, Tardy Response: Lightning McQueen says, "Is it getting dark out?" at which point Lizzie was supposed to activate the neon lights, but she didn't hear him. Lightning tries again, but Lizzie actually forgot what she was supposed to do and Red decides to do her job for her. His scream when he wakes up after getting lost is used again when he is about to crash into a Cozy Cone, a third time when the Stanley statue lands in front of him, and a fourth time when he sees Frank.

Cars: Fast as Lightning (2014) note An iOS game released by Gameloft that features characters from the first two films. Central Theme: Understanding that winning isn't the best part of racing and learning what's more important in life. Credits Montage: After the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue, the credits continue over a series of slow-motion stills throughout the movie. The character "Fillmore", referring to the famous San Francisco music venue The Fillmore, was at one time to be named "Waldmire" after Bob Waldmire, a self-proclaimed hippie artist known to Rt. 66 fans for his detailed pen-and-ink maps and postcards of the route. Though Waldmire's family owns the Cozy Dog Drive-In, Bob, having since become a vegan, preferred not to see his name put on a character that "would become a McDonald's Happy Meal toy."

Spin-offs:

Moon Mater— Mater is inducted into the NASCA space program. His mission: Rescue Impala XIII, who has broken down on the moon. This wasn't the first film in which Owen Wilson portrayed a rookie who starts out snobbish at first, but softens up eventually. One of the cars in the first race is sponsored by 'Leak Less'. A bottle of 'Leak Less' fuel is seen in WALL•E. Weathers' wife is voiced by Richard Petty's late wife Linda, and her vehicle is modeled off of the actual stationwagon the Petty family used to drive from race to race. Doc bitterly refuses to reveal much more about his past (despite Lightning witnessing him expertly drifting through the loose dirt of Willy's Butte where Lightning crashed), labeling his old trophies as "a bunch of empty cups".

Mia and Tia make a very brief cameo in Cars 2, cheering as Lightning McQueen races by them at the Radiator Springs Grand Prix at the end of the movie. Befitting its globetrotter plot, the sequel expands the puns to places and things, such as Petrodilly Circus and Big Bentley in London, the Republic of Rearendia, and mentions about the Running of the Bulldozers in Pamplona. Lightning McQueen's number was originally going to be 57, as a reference to the year John Lasseter was born, but was later changed to 95, as a reference to the year Toy Story came out. Several of the senior animators and designers at Pixar are also car enthusiasts, and the company regularly holds in-company car shows where staffers bring in their vintage and exotic automobiles. He is a green race car who appears as the arch-nemesis of Lightning McQueen and Strip Weathers and one of the rivals of McQueen.Downtown Radiator Springs • Fillmore's Fields • Willy's Butte • Redhood Valley • Tailfin Pass • Wheel Well • Tired Flats • Overheat Peak • Double Clutch Gulch • Stanley's Oasis • Ornament Valley Alley

Assumed Win: After the race in the beginning, McQueen assumes he won the Piston Cup, and proceeds to make a big entrance... only to find out it was a tie. Despite the fact this world is full of anthropomorphic automobiles, a lot of them seem to closely resemble their voice actors. Lightning for instance has the same sky blue eyes and smooth smile as Owen Wilson, whilst Doc still looks like Paul Newman dead-on.

Films:

In a post-credits scene, a minivan couple named Van and Minny, who earlier asked the people in Radiator Springs for directions to the interstate despite Van constantly declining, are shown still wandering in the desert all tired, dirty, and weary with Minny desperately complaining Van to ask for directions, and in his insanity, he still declines and thinks an off-road ramp is close by to them. Hey, where you been, McQueen? I've been kind of lonely. No one to hang out with, oh, except the Dinoco folks. Oh, and the twins. Of course. You know, the twins, the ones that used to be your fans, but now they're my fans. Anyway, listen to what the twins think. Painting the Medium: You can see Mater mouthing along to John Mayer's "Route 66" over the end credits.
