About this deal

Soon, this Mezcal was being carried in the luggage of travellers passing from Guatemala to America and beyond. The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers.

Originally created to supply the many musicians and artists frequenting the notorious bar, Cafe No Se. Most often consumed neat in Mexico, mezcal is now finding a place on many cocktail lists across the US and Europe. Rested for two months, this wonderful Blanco has tasting notes of citrus, vanilla and sweet agave, with a long smooth finish.Alabama, Arkansas, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Additional Information: Ilegal Mezcal has a beautifully balanced profile, with a mouth full of agave and a hint of smoke. Due to the recent global glass shortage, we suddenly found ourselves with no access to the bottles we had used for years. The aftertaste is a little bitter and dry with a touch of alum, but finishes with a lingering grassy sweetness, smoke, and a pinch of fennel. Notes I get are eucalyptus, green apples, white pepper, a hint of candied pineapple, and a whisper of smoke.

The mouth feel is extremely smooth, savoury, sweet and smoky characteristics all evolving on the palate with hints of green apple, eucalyptus and pepper. It is made using various types of agave – while Tequila is a monoculture of blue agave, mezcal uses dozens of sub-species – and a highly artisanal production method. Arette Blanco is a premium silver tequila, launched in 2007 and highly thought of on the drinks scene. Ilegal Mezcal Joven was awarded Double Platinum, the highest award, in the ASCoT Awards, blind-tasted and scored for appearance, aroma, taste, and finish.

Ilegal Reposado Mezcal is velvety throughout with a caramelised pear and bitter orange note and on the nose. Our aged mezcals are rested in a combination of new and used American oak, medium char barrels, a unique and complex taste for those who enjoy sipping spirits. The process is an art form and the result is always a beautifully balanced spirit with just a kiss of smoke, making it ideal for cocktails or as a sipping spirit. Serving Suggestions: This is a great introduction to mezcal, so neat is the way to go – but it makes for an intriguing comparison with a traditional Tequila margarita, where that earthy smoke really cuts through. This artisan spirit is created by brothers and fourth-generation mezcaleros Armando and Alvaro Hernandez.
