About this deal

The Essex Boys have spawned more than 10 films – a sub- sub-genre in their own right – usually built around the same money shot: the dramatic recreation of the Essex Boys murders. The influence of gangsters’ molls can never be underestimated. I’ve seen the hardest of men break down and cry over a woman. I’ve known one man try to kill himself when his mistress said goodbye. The toughest of gangsters are capable of deep emotions and can be destroyed by women. But this is a genre that prides itself on wanton violence and C-words. Corruption of morality is a badge honour. “Fans say it’s such a release,” says Fairbrass. “It’s the same s__on all the time. There’s nothing for white van man. People write to me and tell me they have a Footsoldier night – they’ll get in a load of beer and all the boys and watch the whole lot. It’s an escape.”

As of now, it is has not been confirmed whether Vengeance is intended to be the final film in the series. Leach's story was recently told in the film, Rise of the Footsoldier. But he says the lessons he learned should persuade young people to steer clear of a life of crime. It was during his time as a doorman he moved on to the illegal rave scene and was drawn into the burgeoning trade in drugs - particularly ecstasy. After the murder, I had to change my life. It was a wake-up call - to realise I had a mum and dad and a family. When I saw how it affected them and my life, I realised I had to grow up." Chambers, Catherine (2 September 2007). "Rise of the Footsoldier". BBC Online . Retrieved 18 September 2014.

I remember several times going to bed with three or four different women within 24 hours and hopefully leaving them all with a smile on their face. I was totally selfish, I wanted more and more sex, I was notching up women like a Wild West gunfighter. I was like a schoolboy in a sweetshop. And I was helping myself to all the Smarties going. a b "Winners at the 4th annual National Film Awards UK 2019". National Film Awards . Retrieved 29 March 2018.Leach tells everything from his perspective. He does not try to discuss how other people came together. He simply says that everyone knew each other from "around." That was why they were so successful as doormen at underground nightclubs and illegal raves. So much of the book was tied to this semi-legal activity that is evidence that Leach is both trying to sell himself and rehabilitate his former allies. They just protected party-goers and defused dangerous situations. You need hulking people not adverse to violence to ensure peace. The skinny guy with a badge is no match for Leach's muscle. Interesting view of things. However, quasi-legal businesses employing quasi-legal gangsters led to a constant drumbeat of seeking new business. Readers can only read about doormen for so long before they dismiss Leach. There is a weird moral quandary at the centre of the Essex Boys’ infamy on film: real people – and not very nice people – posthumously co-opted as icons of straight-to-DVD crime capers. We started doing very big raves and had to accept you had to turn a blind eye to the drug-dealing. The raves wouldn't have happened without the ecstasy. He adds: “There’s always been that fascination with gangsters and crime, but there’s a bigger fascination I think with these characters. I can remember taking my kids to school that morning and hearing they’d been murdered. It’s not every day you hear of three men being gunned down.” So it’s the totty, the girls who lap up all the danger and excitement of gangland, who generally get to see the bright lights and the gangsters’ get-togethers in dimly lit clubs. That’s OK as long as the tail doesn’t start wagging the dog. I’ve seen time and time again how girlfriends start getting their claws in, how they try to influence important decisions, how they try to exercise their own likes and dislikes about different members of a firm.
