You want a phone with a vivid, detailed and easily readable display, so we check how the screen looks in different light conditions and use microscopes to asses sharpness and resolution. This camera produces shots with balanced exposure, and while it probably won't win you any photography awards, it's a solid performer. It is an overall excellent and quite popular midranger that just so happens to offer some of the same extras as the Xperia 10 V, like stereo speakers and IP67 ingress protection. The Sony Xperia 1 V is easily the more capable of the two smartphones with an exciting primary sensor. We can't fail to mention the excellent battery life the Xperia 10 V manages from its 5,000 mAh battery and now with notably faster charging, even if still rather slow in the grand scheme of things.It’s point-and-shoot as you’d expect, with all three of the lenses (a rare sight in a budget phone) delivering solid results when lined up correctly. Moving onto Avatar: The Way of Water, also on Disney Plus, the intense battle sequence towards the end of the film provides us with a chance to study motion on this device. On the plus side, the Dimensity 1080 chipset of the Redmi can capture 4K video, unlike the Snapdragon 695 inside the Xperia. While the telephoto camera uses a humble 8MP sensor, I found the 2x shots I obtained from it preferable to those of the Pixel 7a, which crops in on its main sensor.

Back to the rear of the device, you’ll find a triple camera tucked neatly into one corner with a small flash unit on the back. It’s a double-edged sword to be truthful, as while the skinnier display is easier and more comfortable to hold and use with one hand on the horizontal axis, it is a bit trickier to accomplish vertical swipes from the top of the display. On the software front, both phones run on Android 13, but the Xperia 5 V enjoys a slight edge as it is likely to receive more timely software updates and support. It’s a little fiddly compared to some other solutions, but between two tabs and a bunch of common apps, you just hold and drag your desired one into the split area beneath. It’s available in four finishes; Black, White, Lavender and Sage Green, with the last two colour options offering a more vibrant pastel finish – something to consider if you prefer to stay away from traditional monochromatic mobiles. This new camera module means that the Xperia 1 V can produce images with better dynamic range, as well as clearer and brighter low-light shots.
