About this deal

The tumbling acrobat consists of an action figure and two small bars, and he flips over when you squeeze and release the poles. Artist Hazel Terry recently told me about Science Toy Maker, which is a site run by a brilliant technology educator and filled with great toy projects including this oscillating woodpecker. For the record, the Woodpecker toy consists of a rod (static) on which a sleeve (ring) is connected. The instructions on the linked page are really good and detailed and don't forget there are free patterns you can use.

I have collected some of the greatest classics and made sure there are some kind of how-to-make instructions for each of them. Also they have different variables: Lagrange only generalized coordinates/velocities and the Hamiltonian a generalized momentum variable. because though you should end up with equivalent solutions from all methods, it's frequently found that one of them gives you a particularly easy procedure. After finding this toy idea on the brilliant Science Toy Maker site a couple of years ago, I made this woodpecker. It is simple to put together, and there is a template and instructions below to help you make your own.Now I am not going to go into details about the model or justify this approach, I am just trying to understand the equations of motion for the woodpecker during different stages of its path down the road. I showed my kids the video of the woodpecker last evening, and my four-year-old watched it over and over and over. I like more the effect of the wooden toy shown before it, but if you are not convinced in making it, this papercraft one should be easy enough to start with.

Kyle Kanos and Chair: Firstly I am intrested in how to derive them, that was the question, because now I really don't have an idea why the equations hold. If you’d like, you can use the dotted lines and fold the paper in half lengthwise so you can cut both sides of the bird out at once.

hace tiempo que te sigo y quería agradecerte todas las ideas que nos das, y felicitarte por el blog, tu imaginación, tu arte y tu generosidad. BUT … all of the above is an over-simplification, because it ignores the relative vertical motion of the bird and the ring! Of course you can't use it to produce toys commercially, but I guess no one will go after you for making one toy for your own use.
