About this deal

First there was the finding that British primary school children were more at ease naming their favourite Pokémon character than they were at naming a hare, a deer or an oak tree. maybe its because the last 2/3 have such a dreary tone compared to the beginning and i just wasnt feeling it. Williams is co- executive producer, along with Alex Dimos and Andrew Nunn, while Anton Andreacchio is producer of the series.

Also set in Oxford, during the First World War, two characters from the first novel appear in this one too. I was just blown away… you feel that something that you were very inspired by, has inspired some beautiful writing as well. We wanted it to be quite unlike any other book that exists: to catch at the beauty and wonder - but also the eeriness and otherness - of the natural world.

Only a year after publication, the book had won two literary prizes and been translated into several languages. Aunt Teresa's feet and legs could belong to no other relative, neatly crossed at the ankle above the very still feet in orthopedic shoes. Esme, even though she is working class, has her loving dad, a home, eventually a job working in the Scriptorium, yet she never seems happy.

She wants to collect the words on her own, and not just wait for them to come by mail to the Scriptorium. Firstly, there is her own “bondmaid”, Lizzie, who is more of a dear friend then a servant, remaining faithfully by Esme’s side throughout the whole novel. It wasn’t the fault of the dictionary that these words were not included, but the culture in which we live which seems to give more importance to the urban than the wild. It’s a book to thrill the lover of words, rich with the influences of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Dorothy Wordsworth and the metaphorical nature of Old English kennings – the adder has sine-wave swerves, ivy scales are like sky-wire, the kingfisher is colour-giver, fire-bringer, flame-flicker, river’s quiver. The overwhelming and widespread response to The Lost Words and Spell Songs also offers a heartening opportunity for the redevelopment of a strong shared poetic and musical culture, rooted in an awareness of our environment, both local and beyond, something which has been eroding over time, brought about by the loss - of words, the ability to name, the capacity to notice.

A major work for children’s choir and orchestra has been co-commissioned from composer James Burton by the Boston Symphony (USA) and Hallé Orchestra (Manchester, UK) for premiere performances in 2019 (Boston) and 2020 (Hallé).He announced at Hay Festival that we were working on the project together, but we had still to find a publisher who would take the idea and run with it. Overall, I thought that this book provided some interesting, good food for thought, but it should be been half of its size. Mabel, who sells used wares, fills Esme with plenty of words, even with some which may raise one’s eyebrow or give a good chuckle. The Lost Words is a ‘book of spells’ that seeks to conjure back the near-lost magic and strangeness of the nature that surrounds us. However, the title made me look further and I discovered it's not tragedy porn; it's not even about WWII.

Listening to Robert MacFarlane read his spell of a kingfisher in the offices of Hamish Hamilton gave me that same sense of wonder. These words included bluebell, conker, heron, acorn and perhaps the one that cut the deepest for me, kingfisher. From the beginning, it was important that I weave Esme's fictional story through the history of the Oxford English Dictionary as we know it.
