Despite the abolition of the slave trade in 1808, and eventually abolition of slavery altogether, the horrors of slavery left a legacy of racial segregation and oppression that has survived to today. The relationship uses the term "slave" because of the association of the term with ownership rights of a master to their slave's body, as property or chattel.
