About this deal

I was thrilled when Paperhouse was released but it all seemed so different, a bit more "grown-up", different illness (I think Marrianne had a broken leg in the series and not glandular fever)and missing the stones with one eye if I remember rightly. Anna blocks the door from him, and he smashes his way through the window and destroys Mark’s bike that they were going to escape on. Soon Marianne finds that whatever she draws appears in her dreams and, excitingly if slightly frighteningly, the people and places begin to come alive. It is not something right outside themselves and this immediately puts it, not only into their comprehension but it also gives them a degree of power. Afterwards, while regularly producing new children's books, she also worked as an editorial assistant for Penguin Books, from 1966 to the early seventies.

Marianne Dreams - Still Scared: Talking Paperhouse and Marianne Dreams - Still Scared: Talking

A dream movie that uses images so real and so concrete, they seem more convincing than most real-life dramas. Marianne Dreams has been the basis of several film, TV and radio adaptations, including the 1972 British ITV children's TV series Escape Into Night (which was quite faithful to the novel), and the movie Paperhouse (which was less so).She went on to study English literature at Newnham College, Cambridge, and at first pursued a career as a novelist without success. The rest of the novel goes back and forth between the real world, and the dream world, in which it becomes increasingly urgent that Mark gets stronger, so that they can escape from this house to the lighthouse on the hill.

Author Catherine Storr was born in London, England on July 21, 1913 and was brought up in Kensington. I must say, the TV show makes this distinctly less “weird” by confirming that Marianne fell off a horse and broke her leg; if she’s hallucinating, it’s because of the boredom of bed (like in the classic Victorian metaphor-for-the-lives-of-women short story the Yellow Wallpaper).

Adam: It reminded me a bit of Knightmare, that whole sequence of her trying to do something without being able to see in the real world. When she discovers the inevitable repercussions of this passing tantrum in their shared dream state, she begins to realise the sense of responsibility that she must now bear for the helpless Mark (remorseful, she draws food, books and other distractions for her new-found companion) and – indeed – the true nightmarish qualities of the world she has created. In their waking lives, they never meet, or even communicate – everything that Marianne knows about Mark and his deteriorating condition comes second-hand, from the anecdotes of Miss Chesterfield.
