About this deal

I bought this as a gift for a sibling, but I decided to read it beforehand to make sure they would actually like it. The fun of messing with Mario is the incongruence of the parody and the icon whose only updates to the times seem to be the detail of the hair on his smooth, vacant face. One could perhaps read this as a criticism of heroes in general, but I suspect Hikawa is simply focused on gags, and Dedede, being the games’ villain, is the one who has to get the short end, even if it means presenting Kirby in an often petty, ignoble light and Dedede as his unfortunate victim.

Viz Media originally had plans to localize Kirby of the Stars: The Story of Dedede Who Lives In Pupupu into English for North America in 2009, making an announcement about the series. I’m glad I did, because I’m sure they wouldn’t have liked it (I ended up getting them Star Allies instead).Kirby drinks a bottle of alcohol (translated as “loopy juice”) and proceeds to drunkenly destroy King Dedede’s relaxing sakura viewing party. Kirby isn't really the cute, loveable pink puff that he is in the games - he's kind of the ass of all of the chapters, for the most part: he causes all the problems and makes everybody uncomfortable. At New York Anime Festival 2009, Viz Media revealed that they would be releasing the Kirby manga in North America, with a planned release date of September 7, 2010.

This Kirby is a mischievous elementary schooler, like the ones who read his stories while they were being published. When developing Kirby’s Dream Land, Iwata Satoru liked the fact that anyone could draw Kirby, and Sakurai Masahiro wanted to make a game that anyone could play. My favorites were the toy king "episode" - it's like Beauty and the Beast - but Kirby style and the game of life "episode" - think the classic game, but with a dark twist. The series would later be published as a "best-of" collection, featuring a selection of chapters that Hikawa considers the best, in addition to bonus comics. Then the craziest shit happens: Wielding his hair like a buzzsaw, Kapar slices off Dedede’s face and wears it over his own, just like Nic Cage did in John Woo’s iconic, 1997 cheesefest Face/Off. These injuries include having a tennis racket pierce his forehead and Kirby singeing his tongue in a vain attempt to cook a raw potato in his mouth. Aside from Kirby himself, the manga features many of the characters from the Kirby series of games, including Meta Knight, King Dedede, and many of the regular enemies and bosses from the games as well. Kirby reacts with his new manga catchphrase, “pee-poh,” before descending upon the masses and making a break for their food.

In the second story, Dedede is turned into a toy by a spiteful witch, and can only turn back once he learns to be kind. While Kirby’s campaign promises don’t go beyond him yelling that he’s going to be king of the world, how he inevitably gets there is some “stop the steal” type shenanigans. I'm not really sure how I want to rate Manga (I wasn't even sure if I wanted to count it towards my goal, but I've been in a reading slump and this felt approachable). The official English translation takes some liberties, mainly in substituting Japanese puns that would not work in any other language, and sound effects are redrawn in English. It's mostly Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Deserted Island Diary, as you can see, but it's also got an excerpt from a Kirby series. I don't read manga, so this genre is all new to me (my students like manga, so I figured I'd give a few titles a go based on my interests), but Kirby is supposed to be a kid-friendly franchise, and IDK how this got past Nintendo and HAL Labratory for approval. In Chapter 1 of the Japanese orginal version, Kirby consumes a drink with a label that reads 「酒」 which means "alcohol.

Many references to Japanese culture and media are fully retained, though without any translation notes for them. Like the Super Mario-kun comics for which there was recently a collection released, these are pretty zany, but I'd say that style probably works better with Kirby than with Mario. Its volumes are mainly collections of stories from throughout the 1995 - 2006 run of the series Kirby of the Stars: The Story of Dedede Who Lives In Pupupu, originally serialized in the magazine CoroCoro Comic. As gag comics go, it might seem a bit bewildering at first glance, given the relative strangeness of the characters and their settings, but that is more a matter of design than a matter of one needing foreknowledge of the games; if you’ve ever heard of Kirby, then you probably know all you need to know about the character to understand his comics, which don’t seem to reflect the plotlines or mechanics of the games beyond his inhaling abilities. I’m haunted by all these words he should have never spoken, but the speech is just the first of several unsettling choices Hikawa makes. Hikawa’s gag abilities are sharp, and the pages are loaded with jokes, most of which are character-driven and therefore translate perfectly well for English-speaking, Western audiences (not always the case with humor manga). Kirby of the Stars: The Story of Dedede Who Lives in Pupupu ( 星のカービィ デデデでプププなものがたり, Hoshi no Kirby: Dedede de Pupupu na Monogatari ) is a Japanese manga series based on the video game series of the same name written and illustrated by Hirokazu Hikawa [ ja]. A host of fan artists have done their horny worst on that account, and Mario remains an unsullied, static mascot.
