Before each game, no matter the task at hand, everyone at the table sits around for a little while to rebuild the island, spending the hard-won resources earned during the last scenario.

Draftosaurus uses the “pick and pass” style of card drafting, yet instead of drafting cards, you are choosing dinosaur meeples.Now, we aren’t saying we were expecting actual, real-life raptors to invade our home, but we also weren’t expecting plywood ones either. Those options from previous films may reappear in a cameo of sorts, offering a new suite of helpful powers found on the back of their character cards. The facilities are then added at their pre-determined locations and the players start in the centre or the island with the dinosaurs starting in their pens.

Jurassic Park: Danger is a 2-5 player adventure strategy game, produced by Ravensburger and set on Isla Nublar which pits one player controlling the dinosaurs against up to four other players trying to fix the facility and escape the island. Players must work together as a team and agree on what action to take, as their choices in one session can have permanent consequences in future sessions. Harry really appreciated how quickly he was able to understand the rules which meant he could get playing independently within a couple of rounds and start having fun.

It’s quite the accomplishment that the mystery and surprises experienced still present as fresh despite the range of legacy games now available. Unlike the humans, the dinosaurs cannot run out of cards as the player shuffles and reload their deck whenever they have an empty hand. The clever board is made of a series of hexagons that you can arrange any way you like, meaning that the board can be different every time you play, bringing new challenges to the table and making it more nail-biting than the raptors in the kitchen scene. All actions follow a set pattern, roll against a predetermined number (shown either on the board or a card) and if you roll equal to or higher than that number, you are successful!

It’s a loving touch — despite the oddity of channeling the movie’s era as opposed to frames from the actual films. It’s the same sort of tension baked into the semi-random deck of cards in the game Pandemic, but with only five rounds and five cards to pull the tension feels much tighter and more focused.Those same early games will find you rescuing visitors, dealing with power outages, and locating animals scattered all over the park — essentially reliving the plot of Jurassic Park across two two-hour games, plus a tutorial. There are multiple color-coded 'sectors' across the board, and each one is home to a randomised set of dinosaur behaviours that tell you what the creatures will do every turn. Furthermore, they don’t simply feel unique, but they truly feel like the original Jurassic Park — capturing a feeling and emotion that’s been diminished in the most recent set of films.
