If it wasn’t for that player I’m sure it would have still been a good experience but how it panned out with some stranger helping me was one of the most memorable experiences in my gaming past. The addition of an unnamed second player was described by Donlan as brilliant and as a "master stroke", and Edge said it made for "a more absorbing, more atmospheric experience". The developers designed Journey like a Japanese garden, where they attempted to remove all the elements that did not fit, so the emotions they wanted to evoke would come through. Not sure why as for me they are very similar games in terms of exploring (and controls), one is under water the other in a desert.It's the kind of game that you want to tell Roger Ebert to go play after he makes inflammatory statements about how video games can never be art. And yet for all the activity within the environment, your adventure feels isolated unless you happen upon the company of another player. Its ability to convey emotion and spirituality through its crisp visuals and stunning orchestral soundtrack is nothing short of incredible. Wintory spent time experimenting and discarding many ideas; while the first track, "Nascence", came easily, the final track, "Apotheosis", went through several widely varied attempts. Gentle puzzles and hidden scraps of material that extend your fluttering scarf and let you stay airborne for longer provide the only traditional gameplay elements to be found in this adventure.
