RH:I have a standard, cherrywood desk against the south wall of a nine-by-twelve room, a matching desk with overhead bookcases and a hutch for my iMac computer against the north wall, and a Random House dictionary on a lectern between them at my left hand. It’s not like this is stuff you need to know to understand what’s going off in the life of Adolph, it’s all just noises off, and anyone with the merest grasp of German inter-war history can do without Ron’s history lectures. This gives a more chilling look into the man, as Geli becomes more infatuated by her uncle, and he too is somewhat under her spell, the German people's enchantment with him grows.

Of course, Hansen intends this to be ironic and Geli finds out how wrong she is long before her lover presses a gun to her chest. In them an alcoholic, say, narrates how he was introduced to liquor, then found his drinking was accompanied by problems, until finally there were only problems. Instead of evoking the banality of evil, Nazi ideologue Alfred Rosenberg’s noxious bad breath almost suggests that the banal is evil.Granted this gives more "insight" into how truly sick he was but it focused on his love life and his quirks. Together they are having the time of their lives raising hell with their eight children: Barbara, Seamus, Bernadette, Norah, Liam, Anastasia, Mara Naomi, and Lucy. I once wrote a play about her, and since then I have always had an eye open for other works about her.

Weboth went on a six-day retreat at Saint Beuno’s in Wales whichwas enormously valuable, and I visited the Roehampton novitiate of the Jesuits, the college at Oxford where Hopkins matriculated, and the rooms of the school in Dublin where Hopkins taught and lived. His idea of respect for women gives way to a fundamental misogyny and traditionalism that require them to serve him, and his idea of passion is possession and control of the object of his desire. Fortunately for Catholics and non-Catholics alike, Nebraska-born and Catholic-raised novelist Ron Hansen dismissed reports on the death of Catholic fiction as greatly exaggerated. The answer is straightforward: education about the past is our greatest defense against the insanities we are bound to meet in the future.

I mean, I know Hitler was supposed to be very controlling and those surrounding him were unable to escape his throes but, I would believe this girl or her mother or brother or someone would have "seen the light" and helped her "escape. The thought of Hitler being intimately involved with anyone is grotesque in of itself, but I thought maybe good writing could overcome the subject matter. It is fiction which included many interesting, bizarre facts about Hitler, the hyptonic affect he had on people, the psychotic group of misfits with whom he surrounded himself, and the fact that he could have actually been the one to murder his niece who was supposedly the only woman he really loved. The first part of this sentence simply isn’t true: psychologists, after all, try toaffectactions and result. From a watchful father figure he becomes a smarmy suitor and eventually a wildly jealous and possessive warden. Given this novel’s many strengths, it’s surprising to me that Hitler’s Niece received some scathing reviews, particularly from The New York Times. Can you speak a little about the collection and why you see this time as propitious for a collection of short stories?

Many are drawn to Hansen’s works by his ability to take what might be considered a footnote in history and transform it into an opportunity for profound and moving fiction. Hitler would not die for another 14 years, when he committed suicide in his bunker below the garden of the Reich chancellery in Berlin. When she expresses her distress, her friends turn their back on her and even her mother would rather, essentially, prostitute her to “Uncle Alf,” “the patriarch” of the family, rather than face poverty again. Hansen also had some really silly scenes, such as one where Goebbels reads to Geli right out of his diary. Obviously, the latter depiction is more tolerable, but Hansen overdraws Hitler’s villainy to the point where he might as well grow his mustache and twirl it.This novel follows Hitler's early years and his perverted relationship with his niece that ultimately resulted in her death either by suicide or Hitler's hand. Signed by author Ron Hansen directly on the title page; When the daughter of Adolf Hitler's niece is found dead, the world is in shock.
