About this deal

The quotes are lovely, and sometimes heartbreaking, but all of them memorable, which is the critical thing when you need them for an exam. I actually preferred this; I have a hard time getting through nonfiction because of the lack of a story, but the fast pacing of Heroes kept me reading.

To try and do so would spoil the fun, you will get the ‘gist’ of the story by just reading through them – and in time, you’ll remember more than you think you have. Francis signs up to become a soldier at the age of fifteen and is brutally injured when a bomb blows off his face. The book is narrated by Francis Joseph Cassavant, the main protagonist close protagonist The main character. Nancy Drew is a young, fearless detective who is always smartly solving crimes and is the hero of her town. None of the richness to the stories is lost, and you can tell that Fry has a genuine passion and knowledge of the subject (the footnotes alone denote a higher level of understanding than most), while giving sources to further reading if one wishes. When I was a child my favourite movie was Clash of the Titans - the 1981 film with Maggie Smith as Athena and Laurence Olivier as Zeus. However, after that first reading, I came away disappointed- the book was not what I had expected at all.

I don't want to say too much more about this other than that it continues where the first book Mythos leaves off and we move from looking at the Gods themselves to looking at the Heroes and Demi-gods and offspring of Gods who are still remembered today. As one half of the Fry and Laurie double act with his comedy partner, Hugh Laurie, he has appeared in A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster.Remember when I said Francis almost sacrificed his life, fell onto a grenade, and tried to “shield” his comrades from a grenade explosion? In Heroes: The Greek Myths Reimagined, Stephen Fry’s retelling of the timeless tales of the “heroes", we learn about the origins, quests, triumphs and legacies of Perseus, Heracles, Bellerophon, Orpheus, Jason, Oedipus and Atalanta. Many of the flashbacks in the novel refer to the Great Depression which was an effect of the Wall Street Crash of 1929. There is a fine line between what it means to be a good or bad person and Cormier showed us just how blurred the line can be. With 144 cards to collect in total, this year’s Disney Heroes ‘On a Mission’ cards and album will teach kids how they can help the planet through a mixture of fun activities such as games, facts, challenges, quizzes, creative art, recipes and more.

Like Heroes, most of Cormier’s other novels deal with childhood and coming of age, often complicated by violence or tragedy. However, as is the nature of GCSE texts (and any other English Literature study texts, I should think) it's obligatory to read, re-read, and re-read again. Whilst at school he met Nicole Renard and instantly fell in love with her, and continues to be so until at the end of the book.

I was just blown away by Fry's description of why he loves these myths, and their importance to him, and why they should be key to our lives. Radha Davies, Director of Brand Communications and Creative at Sainsbury’s says: “We’re thrilled to bring back our popular collectable cards this September. Although Francis did not enlist as he was not of age when the war began, after Nicole Renard was sexually assaulted and he, mentally traumatized, decided to 'kill himself'. Naturally, the names are still in this book, but Fry has a way of combining different versions of the myths to the most probable one and to tell the thus resulting story in an engaging way that gives any reader a nice idea of what’s going on even if you can’t keep track of who was whose uncle (considering all the incest and double-parentage, that is rather difficult at any rate).
