About this deal

It really gives an insight as to what it was like for each of the mega fights, but without overloading you with needless information. I took the opportunity to read about each fight in detail, then stop and watch each fight to get my own sense of it before going back to the book. Everybody knows what happened in the fights, but they didn’t see what led up to the fight, the rivalries were real, we all wanted to outdo each other, I’m excited that this series will give the public a chance to see behind the curtain.

Marvelous Marvin Hagler obituary: One of boxing’s ‘Four Kings’

The ’80s is widely considered by sports historians and boxing experts to be one of the greatest eras in boxing in large part due to four men whose paths would intersect in some of the greatest bouts in history. Reliving the events in this book is almost bittersweet in a way, as they're no longer a generation of elite fighters today, willing to emulate the four king's legacy and trade leather in the ring. Great factual information, Kimball had access to tell some great stories that I'm sure were not known before it was published, and it is comprehensive. From Leonard's rise after the 1976 Olympics to the controversies surrounding the "No Mas" decision, readers gain insight into the glittering veneer that often surrounded Leonard, shielding some of his flaws inside and outside the ring.

As far as the boxing goes, there's everything: headbutts, low blows, knockouts, broken hands and ribs and dodgy cards and weather.

Nigel Benn added: “I really enjoyed the time I had with Frank and Chris expressing our hearts and being truthful about our careers and life. Minter, who defeated Antuofermo twice, was stopped inside three rounds at Wembley Stadium, where violence in the stands after the fight meant Hagler did not have his hand raised after capturing the WBC and WBA titles.

Really old school and straight forward in its style, which is refreshing, but there is something to be said for the modern approach in terms of looking for deeper narratives. Edgar Gonzalez champions various causes in Anaheim that advocate the welfare of Mexican immigrants as well as those of at-risk youth.

Every boxing fan should read this book and learn about these great warrior showmen, and then go and watch the bouts described in the book, and wish, like me, that you were there to see it. By that stage, though, Hagler had already cemented his status as one of the all-time greats and the tangles he, Leonard, Hearns and Roberto Duran had with each other in the '80s would see them chronicled as the 'Four Kings'.But that doesn’t mean I didn’t pick Jackson Marinez over Richard Commey so frankly I have bigger issues.
