While this concept might seem alien to many of us, if you’re starting, this is a gimbal that will grow with you by using your phone to a mirrorless system. While the size of the handle is nice, the sliding axis feels a little small to deal with some of the bigger cameras it's compatible with. Its size is also less obtrusive than a bigger body pro gimbal, which makes the M3 a good choice for holidays, public spaces, reportage and street photography/videography days. It folds down neatly to fit into almost any day bag and doesn't weigh too much (around 700g), so it's comfortable enough to always have with you. Once you have the hang of the balancing process for your camera hardware, you should be able to whip the M3 out and start shooting in a matter of minutes.

If the size of the gimbal handle was kept the same, but the space between the sliding axis was slightly bigger, we would rate the gimbal a lot higher. New to the CRANE series is the added feature of an interactive 1.22”, full-colour HD interactive touchscreen enabling parameter adjustments to a range of gimbal mode settings (portrait, vortex mode and go-mode) as well as follow speed. Using a small mirrorless phone or action camera on the same gimbal is a great feature and far more useful than you would initially think. You can turn it on by holding down the wheel on the side and then change the brightness by rolling it up or down. My experience with the iPhone 13 wasn't as positive. Despite my best efforts, I simply couldn't get the slim phone to balance along every axis. For the most part, the gimbal did a good job even though it was a little out of balance. But the motors struggled and stuttered when I tried certain types of camera moves, most noticeably when I transitioned from a high to low angle. If you are a full-time smartphone creator, a slimmer gimbal like the DJI OM 5 or Zhiyun Smooth 4 is a better match.

The Crane M3 also comes with a built-in dual-colour temperature LED fill light directly within the gimbal housing, which typically sits to the right of your camera's lens. Often in the past it's been necessary to have a separate light source, either as an optional accessory or as something entirely standalone and separate from the gimbal. The Smooth 5, for example, can accomodate two magnetic light attachments, available as an add-on for the core gimbal. Once the camera is in place, the usual adjustments can be made to the axis balances for the X, Y and Z. Maybe because of the small size; these adjustments are really easy. I found balancing the M3 a relatively simple process. Balancing the phone (iPhone 11 Pro) or action camera ( Akaso Brave 8) proved just how straightforward the process was. It means that you can easily switch between mirrorless, phone and action camera as needed.
