About this deal

Intel’s Ultrabook concept has seen all manner of gorgeous, slim-and-light laptops make their way through the PC Pro office, but one thing they’ve never been is cheap. Now Asus is attempting to right that wrong with its VivoBook S200E, a compact little laptop which crams in a Core i3 processor alongside Windows 8 and an 11.6in touchscreen. Tools can help as extra hands 🙂 A flat bladed screwdriver (or a plastic wedge) are ideal for gently opening the case Using a flat bladed screwdriver to gently pop open the retention clips/tabs One of the interesting aspects of the S200E is the precise touchscreen, which is a very differentiating feature. How usable the screen is, is a different question: even though Windows 8 is optimized for touch inputs, we think that the traditional mouse and keyboard allow for higher productivity. Maybe a brighter and matte-type panel or a larger batterywould have been a better choice than the touch screen. Viewing angles are what always suffer from this display technology but actually this screen does pretty well. Colours are accurate enough and under normal circumstances you shouldn't be bothered by its limitations.

Review Asus VivoBook S200E Subnotebook - NotebookCheck.net

When the CPU and GPU are under load, the system gets quite warm on the underside near the fan exhaust. Aside from that hot spot, the temperatures remain well within limits - the VivoBook stays cooler than most competing systems. if you have not updated to the latest BIOS/UEFI version for your S200E I would try recommending that as sometimes improvements there can reduce fan usage ASUS designers gave ASUS VivoBook a distinct look showcasing the flair and fun of Windows 8 while highlighting chic portability. Textured metal-treated surfaces, an ergonomic edge design, and exciting colors stand out, matching the dynamic nature of new high-mobility intuitive computing. Being ultra-light and extra-slim, ASUS VivoBook excels at making getting around easy! The WLAN adapter(which is sourced from the same manufacturer) is also an entry-level model. The AR9485only supports the (often crowded) 2.4 GHz band andIEEE 802.11b/g/n. Even though the data transfer rate is only150 MBit/s (1x1 Single Stream), we had no issues with the stability of the connection or with the range.Expandability is fairly limited in any case: the RAM is soldered onto the motherboard so the system is limited to4 GB. At least the 2.5-inch hard drive is easy to replace, although it should be noted that a low-profile model (7 millimeter) is required. Those wanting to swap out the WLAN module for a faster one need to consider that only one antenna is integrated. Warranty While the above point might be a matter of personal preference, there is no question that the cooling capabilitiesof the VivoBooks are not even remotely adequate. Although the system features aULV CPU, even regular applications cause throttling that can have quite an impact on performance in certain usage scenarios. When both the CPU and the graphics card are heavily used (gaming), the performance decreases to way below 50 percent.

ASUS S200E 11.6-inch Touchscreen VivoBook (Intel Pentium 1.5

While the (also offered) Pentium 987utilizes last year's Sandy Bridge architecture, our review model features the Core i3-3217U, which is part of Intel's Ivy Bridge lineup. The 1.8 GHz dual-core processor is a ULV model (TDP: only 17 Watts) and manufactured using the 22 nanometer process. Just like all Core i3 CPUs, the 3217 does not feature Turbo Boost but supports Hyperthreading. For additional details, please take a look at our CPU database. Note: The USB flash drive format must be FAT32 so that you are able to update BIOS in the BIOS utility. Here you can learn more about How to convert the USB flash drive format to FAT32. The screen is standard TN fare, so if you're looking for an IPS panel you're going to have to spend a bit more money. But it's decent enough, and for most people we imagine it would be absolutely adequate. Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues. J.D. is an attorney and IT professional living off the grid.
