While in the throes of his drug addiction, Crowley wrote Diary of a Drug Fiend. The fictional work follows a man who becomes addicted to just about every drug under the sun. Although fictional, it’s very likely this was based on Crowley's own struggles. Frieda Bloxam was a daughter of surgeon John Astley Bloxam, F.R.C.S. [1] (1843 - 1926) and Jessie Findlay Bloxam nee Porter (1851 - 1926). [2] She married Percy Harris in April 1901. Percy Harris served as a Liberal Party MP 1916-1918 and 1922–1945, and was Chief Whip for his party. After her husband was created a baronet in 1932 she was entitled to style herself Lady Harris but preferred to use Lady Frieda Harris.

The positive disintegration of structures and confinement, altruistic idealism, infinite imagination, perception of the universe. Crowley advocated complete sexual freedom for both men and women. [280] He argued that homosexual and bisexual people should not suppress their sexual orientation, [234] commenting that a person "must not be ashamed or afraid of being homosexual if he happens to be so at heart; he must not attempt to violate his own true nature because of public opinion, or medieval morality, or religious prejudice which would wish he were otherwise." [281] On other issues he adopted a more conservative attitude; he opposed abortion on moral grounds, believing that no woman following her True Will would ever desire one. [282] Medway, Gareth J. Thus, while during his life his books hardly sold and his disciples were never very numerous, nowadays all his important works are constantly in print, and the people defining themselves as "thelemites" (that is, followers of Crowley's new religion) number several thousands all over the world. Furthermore, Crowley's influence over magically oriented new religious movements has in some cases been very deep and pervasive. It would be difficult to understand, for instance, some aspects of Anglo-Saxon neo-paganism and contemporary satanism without a solid knowledge of Crowley's doctrines and ideas. One of the circle around Crowley in the 1930s was Greta Mary Valentine ( 1907–1998), the adopted daughter of James Henry Sequeira, dermatologist, and his wife, Nellie Adams. Educated in England and on the continent, Greta was studying anthroposophy when she met Crowley in 1936. Although she did not share his interest in drugs or magic, he was fascinated by her flirtations, and soon became her close friend and confidant, while both had other lovers. Crowley declared his love for her, and in 1938 followed her to Cornwall where she was on holiday with Lamorna Birch, the landscape painter. Birch introduced Greta to Ranald Valentine ( d. 1956), who ran a company in Dundee making greetings cards and calendars. When you look at this Magus Thoth Tarot Card, the center is a youthful relaxed character, who is a great dexterity (on the tip of the toe) on the mountain of the subconscious and juggling various symbols floating around. His two ankles are surrounded by a pair of giant wings (the symbol of Crystal), balancing the young man in an exaggerated and passionate posture. A human ape is climbing from the land below.

The fool is one of the most complex symbols in Western esoterica, from mythology to standard playing cards, and Crowley held his own views on this symbol. I should like to emphasise that I am absolutely devoted to Lady Harris, and have the evidence of countless acts of kindness on her part, indicating that her feelings toward me are similar. [4] Both critics of Crowley and adherents of Thelema have accused Crowley of sexism. [289] Booth described Crowley as exhibiting a "general misogyny", something the biographer believed arose from Crowley's bad relationship with his mother. [290] Sutin noted that Crowley "largely accepted the notion, implicitly embodied in Victorian sexology, of women as secondary social beings in terms of intellect and sensibility". [291] The scholar of religion Manon Hedenborg White noted that some of Crowley's statements are "undoubtedly misogynist by contemporary standards", but characterized Crowley's attitude toward women as complex and multi-faceted. [292] Crowley's comments on women's role varied dramatically within his written work, even that produced in similar periods. [292] Crowley described women as "moral inferiors" who had to be treated with "firmness, kindness and justice", [293] while also arguing that Thelema was essential to women's emancipation. [294] Intelligence work [ edit ] Among the famous faces that Crowley in his life met was Aldous Huxley, writer of Brave New World. The men bonded over their love of doing drugs, and it’s said that Crowley even introduced Huxley to peyote! Having arrived in Paris in November 1902, he socialized with his friend the painter Gerald Kelly, and through him became a fixture of the Parisian arts scene. Whilst there, Crowley wrote a series of poems on the work of an acquaintance, the sculptor Auguste Rodin. These poems were later published as Rodin in Rime (1907). [50] One of those frequenting this milieu was W. Somerset Maugham, who after briefly meeting Crowley later used him as a model for the character of Oliver Haddo in his novel The Magician (1908). [51] He returned to Boleskine in April 1903. In August, Crowley wed Gerald Kelly's sister Rose Edith Kelly in a "marriage of convenience" to prevent her from entering an arranged marriage; the marriage appalled the Kelly family and damaged his friendship with Gerald. Heading on a honeymoon to Paris, Cairo, and then Ceylon, Crowley fell in love with Rose and worked to prove his affections. While on his honeymoon, he wrote her a series of love poems, published as Rosa Mundi and other Love Songs (1906), as well as authoring the religious satire Why Jesus Wept (1904). [52] Developing Thelema [ edit ] Part of a series onDespite his controversial views and actions, Crowley inspired countless people going forward. Timothy Leary, the psychologist who is responsible for popularizing LSD, once said on national TV that he wanted to continue Crowley’s work. Aleister Crowley had asked playwright and author Clifford Bax to help him find an artist for a Tarot project. On 9 June 1937 Bax invited Frieda Harris after two artists did not show up for an appointment. She was then aged 60.
