Barn Doors — A metal frame with metal flaps that attaches to the head. It shapes and focuses the direction of the light. So what about Man? What is our Platonic form? What is our essential nature? Where might we find our soul? Gordy LaSure’s passionate about film. He eats film, he drinks film, and sometimes he’ll even watch a film. But most of all he loves talking about film, and how they’d be a shit-ton better if only people would pull their asses out of their ears and listen to Gordy LaSure. In the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, grips are camera support equipment technicians in the filmmaking and video production industries. They constitute their own department on a film set and are directed by a key grip. Grips have two main functions: The first is to work closely with the camera department to provide camera support, especially if the camera is mounted to a dolly, crane, or in an unusual position, such as the top of a ladder. Some grips may specialize in operating camera dollies or camera cranes. The second function is to work closely with the electrical department to create lighting set-ups necessary for a shot under the direction of the director of photography. [1] Basically, G/E works with anything that requires electricity. So, what is a Grip who’s not working with lights?

I listened to the audiobook, which I highly recommend. Hearing Ayoade himself as well as Jon Korkes, which is excellent as Gordy, gives the book a lift, and in the duller parts you can appreciate their voices if nothing else. Nay, in some other dimension there exists an absolute bicycle pump, where its pumpiness is at its most bicycley. And when we picture a bicycle pump, it’s this perfect pump of memory that we do behold.’ The Grip of Film is a piss-take of the A-Z of film books written by and about masters of cinema. For this book, Ayoade has created a character, Gordy LaSure, a guy obsessed with the rules regarding what makes a great movie. Movie being the operative word: “A movie is a film people want to watch”. Except the only films Gordy wants to watch are Road House and View From the Top. Amicus Productions rises from the grave, to delight of horror fans, first new film, “In the Grip of Terror” in the works – downthetubes.net downthetubes.netI find this to be a bit of a shame, I really liked A Cinematic Odyssey by Ayoade and I also really dig his movies, I really don't know what he was trying to do with this book, it's all over the place and is a complete mess. Grips are also responsible for safety on the set as it relates to the force of gravity. Insofar as stands, ladders, scaffolds, and overhead rigs are properly installed, grips are charged with making them safe because the other crew members must climb on, walk around, or otherwise negotiate the different grip set-ups. The key grip may even be held responsible for injuries that happen on set, especially if the injury is caused by a falling lighting instrument.

Now that we've covered "what does a Grip do," let's talk more specifically about the essential Film Grip tools and equipment. It helps to know some of the basics of the job before you get to the set. So, let’s look at the gear you’ll be using the most. FILM GRIP SET LIFE Know your Film Grip equipment listWe instinctively understand Dalton’s ass to be something important, and yet we know that this particular ass – like all ass – does not exist in its own right. Dalton’s ass is not something separate from the rest of Dalton; it is not a severable component. Film Grips are their own department and handle all of the lighting gear. Everything from C-47s (clothespins) to giant “fly swatters” diffusing the entire set are the domain of the Grips department. Now that we've covered "What is a movie grip," this brings us to the main topic: What does a Grip do? Key Grip Job Explained What does a Grip do?

High-end philosopher Plato (dead, Greek) thought that everything on earth was an imperfect copy of its ‘ideal form’. Dailies (or Rushes) – The unedited footage of the day's filming, often viewed by the director, director of photography and key production staff after shooting has wrapped for the day. Manmaker (Apple Box, Pancake, Half Apple, Quarter Apple) – A sturdy wooden box placed under an actor, crew member or object to make it taller or raise it up. Depending upon the height required, boxes are available in several options, including one inch, two inches, four inches and eight inches high. I get that it’s a satire but I just didn’t find it funny. LaSure is homophobic, racist and sexist and I simply don’t find him to be an entertaining narrator. That’s not to say that other readers wouldn’t get something out of it, particularly those who prefer Ayoade’s earlier comedy and who love to watch anything starring Steven Seagal. In the UK, Australia and most parts of Europe, grips are not involved in lighting. In the "British System", adopted throughout Europe and the Commonwealth (excluding Canada), a grip is solely responsible for camera mounting and support.

But most of all he loves talking to people about whether a comely student with low confidence and a father complex, a Studio "development' exec who doesn’t trust his own judgement, or the countless people Gordy LaSure’s encountered in his capacity as the web moderator on an Excessive Sweating Discussion Forum. Guiding the ambitious resurrection is the new president of Amicus Productions, Lawrie Brewster, known for The Unkindness of Ravens (2016), The Devil’s Machine (2019), and Ghost Crew (2022). Alongside him is his business partner, writer/producer Sarah Daly. Their efforts come after extensive dialogues and collaboration with the family of Amicus founder Milton Subotsky, who have wholeheartedly endorsed this venture.

What is a bicycle pump?’ Plato would have said. ‘Not the imperfect one I’m pointlessly pummeling – this is but a shadow. So I've tried to make this book as dense as possible, like a neutron star. And if you think I came up with that simile by googling 'What stuff is most dense?', you'd be wrong. I already knew neutron stars were maybe dense before I googled it to make sure.” Gordy LaSure has a lot of thoughts about films I've never seen and I have now listened to them all. It was quite the experience. Steven Seagal is referenced frequently, reverently. I've never seen one of his films, which I must say added a lot to the experience - perhaps I will continue to avoid him so that LaSure's loving descriptions can exist in my mind undisturbed. Chain Vise Grip – A vise grip with a chain that is often used to hang a lighting fixtures or equipment. When shooting day exteriors, grips perform similar functions, but with the sun as the primary light source. Grips use overhead frames up to 20' × 20' or larger for the shaping or filtering of sunlight. The lighting set-ups for these exterior shots can become quite extensive, and the use of boom lifts (called "condors") is common. Condors are especially useful at night when they are rigged to raise lights or diffusing material (up to 120 feet in the air) to create moon-effect lighting.
