About this deal

If you want to try the strongest beer that actually tastes something like a beer, give this one a go. But be warned – the alcohol content is still overwhelming, so tread carefully.

This beer, produced in 2009, may have been the one that started it all, throwing down the gauntlet to other brewers and challenging them to beat what BrewDog had concocted. Bitter, a British style of pale ale, comes in a huge variety of colours, types and strengths from 3% to 7% ABV. Sub-types include light ale (low alcohol bitter, often bottled), session bitter (up to 4.1%; includes IPA), best or special (strength between 4.2% and 4.7%), premium or strong (4.8% or over) and golden ale (summer ale). Porter Perhaps with the name of this beer, BrewDog thought they were ending the conversation, although even this monster was eventually surpassed – several times, as we’ve already seen. This is a brewery that knows how to make potent beers that taste fantastic – and this is another perfect example of their craft. By this point, the ABV of 15% is hardly even an issue and is just one part of a rich mix of elements that combine to make an extremely satisfying if potent brew. The elderflower adds a delicate, floral flavour, while the pilsner cuts through the sweetness to add crispness, pleasing those with less of a sweet tooth. It’s juicy, thirst-quenching and only 2.5% ABV, so ideal for those summer afternoon drinks. Another version of the Deal with the Devil beer from Anchorage brewing, this is a double oak-aged iteration with just a touch less alcohol. Be warned, though, it’s a whopping 9.2% ABV, so it’s not for the faint of heart. Nonetheless, it’s an excellent addition to an ever-growing lineup of coffee stouts and can be enjoyed as a drink or a dessert.

Another brewery that decided to join the fun and start creating mind-blowingly strong beers is Brouwerij ‘t Koelschip in the Netherlands, and their most potent offering to date is the 60% ABV Start the Future. It is strongly reminiscent of bourbon thanks to the barrel-ageing process, and while the alcohol is unmistakably there, it is smooth, warm and comforting rather than obtrusive. With the Samuel Adams Utopias, we are almost – but not quite – approaching beers that can genuinely be considered beers. Drivers won’t be taking those cars out on roads – and drinkers won’t be sipping these beers in a bar. But it’s still fun to sample something like this if you ever have chance. It has a good body and mouthfeel and isn’t watery in comparison to many of its non-alcoholic counterparts. It might not be doing anything exciting or innovative flavour-wise, but this is a perfect substitution for anyone craving a classic beer without the high alcohol content. Although stout and porter are very similar, stout is darker and heavier, with a rich, creamy head. It’s flavoured and coloured by barley. Slightly sweeter to the taste than porter, stout also uses a portion of unmalted roasted barley, leading to some delicious, toasted flavours such as chocolate, coffee, oatmeal or cream. Pilsner However, you’ll know if you come across a bottle due to the unique and unmistakable presentation. Bottles of End of History come stuffed inside a real dead squirrel.

The current record-holder for the strongest beer in existence – ever – is Snake Venom from Scottish brewer Brewmeister. It comes with a warning label on the bottle, and at an eyewatering 67.5% ABV, this is not the kind of beer you’ll want to sink in pints. They no longer brew this beer, and only a handful of bottles were ever produced, so it’s unlikely you’ll ever get to sample it. The Rochefort 10 is extremely complex with the alcohol lurking pleasantly beneath the surface without dominating everything else. Another of the famously strong beers, and at 45% ABV, it’s still stronger than most whiskies. The nose suggests countryside fruits, and there’s also some sweetness mixed in, something like molasses or treacle.

7) Becks

Ales are darker and fuller-bodied than lagers, as well as being more robust, complex and bitter, with hints of fruit or spice and a hoppy finish. There are many types, including bitter, mild, pale ale, abbey ale and nut brown. Ales have more individual characteristics than lager, though their alcoholic strength is similar. IPA As a non-alcoholic pale ale, Ilkley Brewery’s Virgin Mary pulls off some pretty impressive feats. First, it has a lovely orange aroma, even though it doesn’t contain any citrus. Second, it actually tastes like beer, despite coming in at only 0.5% ABV. Brewing a beer like this is a bit like trying to build the fastest land car. It shows you can do it and it means you hold the record – but it doesn’t serve any practical purpose. Another entry from De Struise Brouwers, this time a Russian imperial stout. With a slightly more modest ABV of 22%, this beer is more approachable.
