About this deal

Brotherhood, love, and loyalty will be put to the test, and no one will escape the fight unscathed. That being said, many of the things Silvera’s readers love about his books are also at work here. Relationships between characters are the heart of this story, not only between Emil and Brighton but also burgeoning romantic interests and good old-fashioned team bonding. It is those relationships that I am looking forward to seeing carried through into the sequel. I’m hoping that now that I am finally oriented in the world and its players, the sequel will feel like a much less cluttered read. Have you always been a fan of the fantasy genre, and if so, what books or authors are your major influences? This is your first fantasy novel, what made you decide to go in this direction and did you find many differences when writing for this genre?

INFINITY SON — ADAM SILVERA

For me being a hero means putting yourself out there for the betterment of another. Being there for a friend in need, private charity contributions, defending a stranger. I never intended to fully mirror any marginalized community’s experiences, but for anyone who has ever been oppressed for just being, or been blamed for what someone else who shares their identity may or may not have done, I imagine they may relate to what the magical people within this novel are going through. Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own—one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be. You’ve been thinking about this series since you were eighteen. Did anything change when you sat down to start writing?Family isn't always those you are biologically related to; you can also chose people who love and support you as family. Try to understand and empathize with someone who has done wrong, while also holding them accountable. Take responsibility for hurtful things you've done and work to make them right. Work to heal anger and trauma so you can thrive again. Love, self-care, and joy can happen in the bleakest circumstances; they make enduring hardship possible. Did you know you can flag iffy content? Can you talk about the process of weaving real injustices into your fantasy world?

Weapons include daggers, swords, flight, wind, fire darts, wands, super speed and strength, phasing through solids, gem grenades, and hand-to-hand fighting. A villain dies by being consumed by his own fire; scene may be disturbing to sensitive readers. A blood caster, Ness, who proves an ally to Emil in the end, uses an "infinity-ender" blade to cut/scar Emil so as to impair his phoenix powers; it's basically torture, though Ness almost immediately shows regret. Ness and Emil's evolving friendship is quite fraught/complicated because of this act. Characters face grave danger several times; a key character dies in a tragic way. Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own--one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be. Infinity Son takes place in an alternate New York City. Some people, known as celestials, are born with magical powers. The strongest celestials, Spell Walkers, uphold the law of the magical world. It’s their job to protect celestials from magic thieves known as specters. Specters kill celestials and endangered magical creatures to steal their power, claiming it as their own.

Battles involving magical powers like wands, hand-generated fire balls, swift speed, possessing a person and making them do horrible things, telekinesis, and more. A blade is used to stab multiple people, and while there is lots of blood, and fears of dying/death, no one ever actually dies. In the goriest scene, a main character kills a violent specter by pulling his heart out of his chest. There’s also the issue with pacing throughout the novel. It felt like the majority of high impact plot points were rushed through, while quiet times between characters were stretched out. This could be the author’s attempt to highlight the destructive qualities of power, and the importance of mental health and wellbeing, but at times it felt like this pacing conflicted with certain elements of the novel. The first book in the Infinity Cycle series, Adam Silvera’s young adult LGBT fantasy novel Infinity Son (2020) follows two brothers who find themselves at the heart of a magical war and the strain that this conflict puts on their relationship. Critics praise the book for its engaging plot, its complex characters, and its treatment of sibling relationships. Silvera, a New York Times bestselling author, writes for children and teenagers. Speaking openly about his struggles with depression and anxiety, he explores mental health in his books. He is best known for his contemporary novel, They Both Die at the End. Unfortunately, this book was not without its faults, the main issues being with the world building and pacing. The polarising characteristics of Brighton and Emil further this discussion, and create authentic conflict between the two, while also opening up a conversation on power and how it affects those striving for it, along their loved ones surrounding them.As the brothers work on Emil’s magic, Emil feels Brighton’s resentment. Brighton admits that he is jealous because he wants magical powers of his own. He doesn’t understand why Emil has them and he doesn’t. When they ask their mother, Ma, about it, she reveals a family secret—Emil isn’t Brighton’s biological brother. Ma adopted him when he was a baby; she didn’t plan to ever reveal the truth. In your introduction, you talk about your personal experience of coming out a few months after discovering a fantasy novel that featured queer characters. Can you talk about the impact of literature on embracing our identities? I’m working on the second Infinity Cycle book, another sequel to a different book of mine, and my next solo contemporary! Busy! Fantasy magic potions are treated somewhat like drugs in the real world: Non-magic users buy them to get illusions of having powers. Brighton considers buying some.

Infinity Son’ review: An exciting fantasy novel in a magical ‘Infinity Son’ review: An exciting fantasy novel in a magical

Infinity Son is the first fantasy offering from YA author Adam Silvera, whose several popular books include More Happy Than Not and They Both Die at the End. While those novels involve fantastical elements, those elements take second stage to his exploration of the relationships they make possible. (In They Both Die at the End, for example, a service called Death-Cast alerts two teens that they each have only one day left to live. The focus of the story, however, isn’t on trying to thwart fate or uncover how Death-Cast is made possible but on the bond that develops between them during the course of the day.) In Infinity Son, Silvera offers a full-fledged epic fantasy universe, complete with intricate politics, dark secrets, and of course, magic. Although they don’t have any magical powers, brothers Emil and Brighton are both obsessed with Spell Walkers and the work they do. Brighton wishes he had a magical ability because he is sure that he could stop the specters for good. He recently set up a blog to stalk the celestials and the Spell Walkers so he can keep tabs on their every move. Despite Emil reminding him that he has no power, Brighton feels that he has a role to play in the conflict that’s worsening every day.We speak to Adam Silvera, the New York Times bestselling author of They Both Die At The End, History Is All You Left Me and What If It’s Us about his latest novel and his first foray into fantasy, Infinity Son. There are certain instances where Brighton comments on the amount of hits and views he could be getting from certain fight scenes between celestials, which prompts the reader to question his character. This opens up the conversation of someone’s own safety versus their online success, and whether getting the views for a video or post is more important than having a healthy mind set and being present in the moment. The book is split into multiple points of view. Which was the most fun to write, and which was the most challenging? Emil wants peace between the various communities. He doesn’t think that violence or magical conflict is the answer, and the growing tensions make him uneasy. He doesn’t want magical people turning New York City into a warzone; he just wants to get on with his life. Fate has other plans for him. One day, he manifests powerful magic abilities of his own: He can fly. I grew up on Harry Potter and Charmed and Supernatural and X-Men and those stories really shaped my fantasy sensibilities.
