About this deal

Axe Heads must be held securely to the handle. Axe heads that are in danger of coming off the handle or have a head that is easily removed (ie. heads that are clamped or held into the handle by a screw or pin) are not legal for sanctioned events unless otherwise approved by WATL®. Axe throwing has its own variation of cornhole. Players are split into teams of two and scoring is typically done to 21. Your team must score exactly that number of points to win. Before we can get you throwing, we first need to go over the proper way of holding and throwing an axe. We’ll then go over a few more fun games you can play at an axe throwing venue. How To Throw An Axe Each WATL-sanctioned event or league should have targets drawn with an official target protractor/stencil. Excessive movement or ‘wiggling’ of the axe occurs when it lands in the damaged area causing or risking good throws to fall out.

Bosker, Bianca (September 2016). "Big in Canada: Throwing Axes for Fun". The Atlantic . Retrieved December 22, 2016. A placement allowance of up to ½” to account for measurement variabilities (tape measure inconsistencies, board width imperfections, etc) is acceptable provided that uniformity is maintained across targets within the same event. Once prompted by the judge, the trailing player will have 10 seconds to complete their throw, after which time, the throw will count as a fault. Duals follows the standard game format with two exceptions. Teammates are throwing at the same target and both players on the same team must have released their axes before the first one released touches the target. This is often most effectively achieved with a countdown before throwing.Exceptions to any of the above due to circumstances outside of the venue or thrower’s reasonable control may be made with prior permission of the World Axe Throwing League Commissioner or League Manager. Allow players the opportunity to call their targets before they throw, if they choose. On a successful called hit, they receive double the points. If they miss their called target, they get zero! Watch it here. Humans vs Zombies:

There are two main sizes of axes used in the leagues: small (600 and 800g (21 and 28oz)) for normal rounds and big (1 and 1.5kg (2.2 and 3.3lb)) for "tiebreakers". Weights previously written apply only to the blade. The rules of IATF allow to play only axes with wooden handles, WATL does not have any restrictions.

Scoring

With hundreds of venues all over the globe dedicated specifically to axe throwing, it is poised to continue growing and be a popular game for many years to come. Busted: To win, your team must score precisely the number you determined as the X. If you surpass that number, you either lose or try again until you hit the precise figure.

The first rule says you must hit precisely 21 points to win. If you go over, the last throw doesn’t count. If you have 20 points and hit the bull’s eye, your score remains unchanged. If a stalemate is caused by throwers waiting on their opponent to throw or call, then the person in the lead may have the advantage of waiting, and the judge will ask the trailing thrower to throw. The second thrower needs to match the point value of the first thrower, rather than beat it. If the second thrower fails to match the point value of the first thrower, they get a letter. If They succeed in matching it then no letters are awarded, and it becomes the second thrower’s turn to throw first. For venues wishing to host Big Axe throwing, it is recommended for a lane to be a minimum of 20ft in length to accommodate for a 15ft fault line and safe space to throw. Upon review of the rules, if the thrower believes the head judge is also not properly applying the rules, they may appeal to the WATL Head Judge, the Head of Officiating, or any designated WATL rules expert.

Player Horse: Instead of moving around a court throwing shots from different vantage points like you do in basketball HORSE, in the two-player hatchet throwing game HORSE, Player 1 stands 12 feet from the target and calls out the points and location they aim to hit before each throw, such as “3 on the bottom right.” If Player 1 hits the target as called, then the opposing axe-thrower (Player 2) tries for the same outcome. If Play 2 fails to hit the target as called by Player 1, they get the letter “H” and Player 1 will lead again, throwing their axe and calling the location. If Player 2 misses again, they get the letter “O.” If Player 2 makes the throw, however, no letters are assigned and Player 2 gets to throw the next axe and call the points and location and Player 1 follows. If Player 1 misses, they will be assigned a letter. The two players take turns until one spells out the word HORSE, losing the match. Sharpen your throwing skills and take your axe game to the next level. Join one of our leagues and become a champion. We welcome all skill levels to be part of our leagues.

The objective is simple: teams throw axes, score points, and the first to reach an X number of points wins. You can determine “X” based on the available time, the number of players, and the collective skill level. It matters who throws first, since there is a point subtraction involved. Traditionally, whichever player or team scored most recently throws first (even if they have a lower point total). It is recommended to switch who throws first each turn.

Starting out, one player is the lone member of the Zombie team and everyone else is on the Human team. The Zombie throws against a Human using the same scoring method as used in Cornhole (subtract low score from high). If the Human wins, the Human team gets the difference in points. If the Zombie wins, the Human player becomes a Zombie and no points are awarded. If there is a tie, they keep the status quo. No points are awarded and the Human stays a Human.
