But, God, it was far too late for that, wasn’t it? She’d only want to know why he hadn’t said anything before. Sometimes when he looked at her, at that enviably sharp jawline, those bright, busy eyes the exact same shade of burnt umber as her hair, he caught himself wondering how he had come to have this wife and not the one he’d once fantasized about. How he’d come to find himself here, in Silver Vale, of all places, resident now for over a decade and passing for the most part as a contented suburban husband and homeowner. He remembered waking up next to her in the morning with horror in his heart, and how, after dressing, he’d been irresistibly drawn to the bedroom window, which had a view across the road of steel barriers at the top of the steps, the tangled wilderness beyond. Things are not always what they seem. This book will keep you guessing till the very end. Liz, VIC, 5 Stars

If you want a suspenseful summer read that carries its own unique formula then this is a book that will linger in your thoughts for some time after. This novel is a bit like driving up a mountain in which it gradually builds momentum then about mid-way through it reaches a heart-thumping pace and you begin to notice the many twists and turns. Coral, VIC, 4 Stars Hi, I am an avid reader and have been all my life. I put it down to being an only child and having a teacher for a mum. The idea of this blog is to share my passion for reading and review new and upcoming books as well as those that may have been out for several years. Once again, Candlish gives the reader a tightly-plotted tale with plenty of red herrings and distractions that keep the reader guessing right up to the final, fantastic twist and reveal. Her setting and era are perfectly rendered, and her characters recall people we all meet in everyday life, even if many of them are not at all what they first seem to be. This is excellent slow-burn British crime fiction. Since she asked, he had assumed it was a one-night thing, but, well, she’d insisted on pursuing him and eventually he’d thought, Let her have me if it means that much to her. (He didn’t say that in his wedding speech, of course, which had been barely a speech, in keeping with the discreet mood of the occasion; he’d kept the whole photos thing to a minimum, too.)

Wow, what a read! The Only Suspect was a twisty thriller and I did not guess the ending! Even after finishing the book, I kept thinking about all the clues I missed while reading Alex’s stories across the years. Sorry.’ She was right, his attitude was weird, even for him, and it jolted him that she’d noticed early on. He thought he’d been more careful than that. ‘I’m just, I don’t know, a bit cynical about the whole eco-community thing.’ Adding to his disquiet, Beth has taken pity on an acquaintance, recently dumped by the man who got her pregnant, driven out of her job, and homeless, and invited her to stay. Alex is not at all convinced that Zara Lloyd’s predicament is genuine, and wonders what her true agenda might be. Or is that just his paranoia talking? From the internationally bestselling author of The Other Passenger and The Heights comes a new explosive thriller about obsession and deadly secrets.

Sneaking out before I can get your number?’ she drawled from the bed, and he thought, If only that were my biggest problem. These were comments she’d made a hundred times before and that he’d routinely nodded along with. He’d stopped short of participating in the campaign, however, intent on keeping his local profile limbo-dancer low. The last thing he wanted was for Silver Vale to come under the spotlight a second time; it would only resurrect interest in the first. And who sparked a police hunt for a murder suspect that was never quite what it seemed. It still isn’t. The Only Suspect kept me guessing all the way through. It’s the book version of a Rubik’s Cube with so many unexpected twists and turns. An adrenaline-burner for sure!”

The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish review — a first-class

The Only Suspect is a satisfying thriller that moves at such a pace to keep the reader engaged the whole way through. There are just enough hints throughout that you can’t trust any of the characters, which adds to the sense of dread and the need to know what’s really going on. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and devoured it in a couple of days. Vanessa, QLD, 5 StarsThen why let a journalist stir it all up again now if there’s a risk of it affecting house prices?’ Let’s have a look,’ he said, returning to the present, and she passed him her phone, a WhatsApp thread named ‘Trailblazers’ growing in front of his eyes. Christ, how he’d preferred life before you were subjected to these streams of other people’s consciousness; he had enough on his plate wrangling his own.
