About this deal

In addition, and something that really is really just a minor quibble, there are 42 lessons in each book, which doesn’t always fit as neatly into a standard 36 week school schedule and so may require a little schedule jostling on the part of parents. Encyclopedias In addition to being available as digital and print books, The Story of the World is also available as an audiobook (in MP3 and CD formats), so that parents and students can listen to its history lessons, if they prefer. Multisensory The Story of the World is widely accessible, being available in print, digital and audiobook formats. What Grades Or Ages Is It Intended For? Every couple of weeks or so, my fifth grader works on her timeline (we’re using the figures from the activity guide).

There are a LOT of options — everything from simply reading the book and talking about it with your children to doing numerous activities and unit studies for each chapter. There’s supplemental reading, timelines, lapbooks, notebooking, videos, audiobooks, crafts … the possibilities are endless. The four The Story of the World core volumes and the expanded courses created by using the activity books are valuable contributions that fill a need for Christian-friendly, classically-oriented history study. The Story of the World can offer students a broader understanding of history and human civilization as it spends a considerable amount of time exploring civilizations and cultures from around the world, discussing their important figures, histories and societies in some depth. Who is it Not Ideal For? Strictly secular or faith-based homeschools

I hope that helps! I’m excited for you as you begin homeschooling — SOTW has been our very favourite resource over the years and I hope you love it! Reply These suggested reading lists can be pretty eclectic, ranging from additional reference guides (such as Prehistoric World: Usborne World History), to visual fact books to entertaining fact books and more. You can read an entire chapter at a sitting, but I’ve found the kids and I are happiest when we sit down to cover only 1 section at a time. The activity book for Volume 4 teaches students how to outline what they read in the text. Halfway through the book, students begin to write from the outlines, recalling and writing details to expand their outline into a composition. This activity book also adds The Usborne History of The Twentieth Century as another reference resource. Summary Rather than just being a textbook filled with dry facts, The Story of the World teaches history through a story-like narrative that is far more interesting to read and that brings history to life, creating a far more engaging and meaningful learning experience for students Covers a broad range of culturesThey really enjoyed recalling the information and then talking more about the lessons. Lots of opportunities for rich discussion and extra learning – a huge goal and benefit of homeschooling! 7. Social Studies Add-In The Story of the World books are chronological, starting with ancient history in volume one and finishing up with modern in volume 4. If she has a particular time period she is interested in, you could get that. I do think the volumes would stand alone but we love the whole series. Reply Of course if you want to use Story of the World, you’ll need the Story of the World book. But I’m going to tell you a secret- there is soooo much information online, you could totally study pretty much all of history without the book. I like to use it as a guide though. I read the stories and then we do activities having to do with the specific activities. We also we extend the learning by reading about things that happened at the time or other important people from the time period. And then we do activities about that.

Optional: Ancient Egypt Lapbook [for covering more details; can use with chapters 2, 4, 12, 13, & 14]There were some weeks where I could not imagine doing any of the listed projects. They would be just way too time, energy, and/or money. Story of the World does give parents some choice as to which encyclopedia to use, with each lesson in the activity book detailing where students can find the relevant readings in each book. The books treat these cultures and their beliefs with a good deal of respect, providing a good deal of insight into their contributions and formative moments, and, with the inclusion of a selection of their important poetry, literature, stories and more, can give students a stronger understanding of these cultures than many other history curricula. Multisensory and hands-on You may choose to break up the lesson over several days, or do it all in one day. It just depends on what your schedule is and how long your kids can stay engaged.
