About this deal

We mark every occasion with alcohol, whether it's a good day, bad day, new job, old job, divorce, wedding, funeral, birthday, holiday and the list goes on and on…you can always guarantee that someone, somewhere, is getting drunk… and it's 'normal' to get drunk right? Hayley admits for the first time in this interview, the true impact that drinking had on her mental health and how this shielded her from actually facing up to her diagnosis of Charcote Marie Tooth condition (motor neuron condition). Imagine the difference in your life if you were to take those side effects away and save the money to fund what you really want to do with your life – and there's a strong chance it involves something a whole lot more fulfilling than a glass of wine or bottle of beer.

If the idea of giving up alcohol sounds like a sacrifice, think about what you're giving up instead. Quality sleep… Time lost to hangovers… Money you could have used to transform your life… Paul speaks about his time in the steel industry, heavy drinking from his twenties and how it all seemed very normal at the time. The story progresses when his drinking turns to morning drinking, the withdrawals he would have from alcohol if he didn't top up and how he got into recovery. The more subtle argument that I felt that it failed to make was "you should go from drinking occasionally/moderately to not drinking at all". Being someone who went from drinking occasionally to not at all, I don't think I would have been hard to persuade, but I don't feel like Alexander really tried.

Not only has giving up alcohol been transformational for her own health but also in her career. Listen in as we speak with the only sober recruitment consultant on the planet (probably!). The author writes about their personal experience with drugs and alcohol which is that once they started they couldn’t stop. This isn’t everyone’s experience BUT the messaging and overall takeaways are still the same. What you can learn from David Bowie…the 12-step program and how cutting out alcohol creates the perfect space to do so

The Sober On A Drunk Planet podcast follows the success of the book Sober On A Drunk Planet Book and Audio Series. Here we talk to amazing guests about their battles with alcohol and other drugs and how getting sober allowed them to live a life unimaginable when they were drunk or high (or both!). As far as tone goes, he went for an emphatic voice, sort of like he was salesman for sobriety. While I believe he feels this way, writing in this style always feels a bit disingenuous to me. The book is filled with lofty promises of endless energy, disappearing anxiety, loads of confidence, career success, fitness, etc. I agree that alcohol can be an impediment to these things, but in my experience quitting drinking doesn't create super-humans. Likewise, I felt like he underplayed some of the challenges associated with total abstinence. Rob shares his story about how he was watching a star is born on a flight whilst drinking two bottles of wine and that started the process in which he gave up for good. We talk about how rugby (he's a kiwi) and booze go hand in hand, how men get social anxiety as well and how stoicism is a great way to live life.

Sean Alexander is the international best selling author of the Sober On A Drunk Planet book series. I have an in-depth chat with Ben about corporate culture and how they largely ignore people with addictions (myself included) yet they are willing to help those who state they have a mental illness.
