About this deal

This is a wonderful story at the heart of it is love and the many forms it takes. Lou thought her life was going well after building up her life after an abusive marriage ended in tragedy. Then all of a sudden she needs to find a new home but at least she has her job. When the job goes she is upset but understands. She is a caregiver a role that she fell into and loved. Nothing. No need to get up, I’ll see myself out.’ Not that he’d shown any sign of rising from his chair. ‘And don’t worry, I’ll put the ad in the newsagent’s window.’ Well, Jill Mansell has done it again guys. Jill is one of those beautifully consistent authors that always writes books that make you feel warm and cozy while you’re reading them (and long after). All of the characters in Promise Me felt so real, you can actually envisage them as people in the world around you. From Lou’s lovely personality to the grumpiness of Edgar, the charm of Remy through to the absolutely adorable four legged Captain Oates. There’s laughter, love and friendships abundance in this gorgeous book with a few moments in between that made me tear up a tiny bit (it wasn’t tiny, I cried like a baby realising it has to grow up and eventually pay bills). The last thing Lou wants is to move to a tiny Cotswolds village. She certainly doesn’t intend to work for curmudgeonly eighty-year-old Edgar Allsopp. But Edgar is about to make her the kind of promise nobody could ignore. In return, she secretly vows to help him fall in love with life again.

Not forgetting an equally grumpy chihuahua to give Edgar a run for his money, and her best friend who may finally be about to get a break from an unlikely source. Lou's relationship with her best friend, Sammy, and his older brother, Remy (who she's been harboring feelings for since their younger days) was one of the highlights of the story. And Captain Oates, of course! Truly man's best friend, in this case, Edgar - their relationship was so wholesome, so very sweet, so very sad at Edgar's final moments, that had me tearing up.Overigens was hij meteen mijn meest favoriete personage in dit boek. It just went to show, you never knew when one seemingly insignificant action might cause another that was capable of changing your life." If she’d been on her own, she might have joked, ‘Are you telling me he’s a mad axe murderer?’ But since Edgar was sitting less than six feet away, she said, ‘That’s right! I’ve just made him a mug of tea.’ I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Random Things Tours. I did have someone. She left, same as all the rest of them.’ He pointed at an area beneath a chair. ‘You missed a bit.’

Promise Me by Jill Mansell | Goodreads

Edgar is a treat. What a difficult and disagreeable old man. Lou does her best with him and we do see a more affable, but still brutally savage Edgar emerge. It is amazing what the love of a good dog can achieve too. When Della, a woman from Edgar’s distant past arrives on the scene, things change for Lou. She leans on the members of the small community that she’s become part of more than ever and Edgar is going to learn a stark lesson about human nature too. This was a lovely heart-warming story that sang with all the delights of a typical cozy Hallmark film, complete with the cozy British feel-good warm fuzzy feelings of a large and loud colorful cast of characters that charm their way into your heart with their frantic antics and lovable moments. 🥹🥹 Simply an endearing and light read that makes you want to move to the countryside when all else fails, much like, Lou, our heroine did.I don’t know. He lives in a big house at the top of the hill. It’s Sammy,’ Lou explained to the man sitting at the table. ‘He’s asking who you are.’ Whilst Lou and Edgar are the human stars of this book, it is Captain Oates, the tiny rescue dog who really steals the show. Almost as grumpy as Edgar, with a snarl to match, he’s a joy to discover. Meanwhile Sammy’s brother Remy has begun to catch Lou’s eye. Handsome and charming, with women falling at his feet, Lou is determined that she will not become another notch on his bedpost. Resisting temptation is not easy! A real ray of sunshine and - exactly what's needed right now - Jill's books should be on prescription! * Phillipa Ashley *

I love a story which features a cantankerous character and eighty-year-old Edgar was the perfect complement to Lou’s sweet demeanour. It was a joy to watch the relationship between these two develop into something more than employer and employee. This is my first book by Jill Mansell, but it certainly won’t be my last. The story is beautifully written, with warmth and wit. I read the book in a day as I couldn't get enough of it. Lou heaved a sigh. This was getting silly now; she’d got herself into a situation with a truculent pensioner who was a stranger to manners. And much as she wanted to say no to his demand, her conscience wasn’t letting her.Lou is needing to start over, her husband (although not a very nice one) has died, she has just lost her job and been turfed out of her home. It wasn’t a retirement home, then. Nor, from the look of the place, had it been divided into separate apartments. Secrets never stay hidden for long in Foxwell, nor are promises always kept. And no one could guess what lies ahead… My Thoughts: The absolute definition of reading for pleasure, it will bring hours of happiness * Veronica Henry *
