About this deal

Healthy plant growth – This vulcanic soil is full of nutrients and has a quite big grain size, ideal for most plants. This substrate is quite light, so plants can loosen when first adding water to the tank. Making the substrate wet before filling the tank is the solution. Once you’ve chosen the right substrate, it’s time to start building it up. The process is actually quite simple: just add layers of substrate until you reach the desired depth. For most aquarists, two inches (5 cm) is sufficient; however, if you have larger fish or are planning on planting heavy rooted plants, you may need up three inches (7 cm) or more. The popular belief regarding aquarium gravel with cory catfish is that is causes cory catfish barbels to erode and die off. Rinse off any dust from the new substrate before adding it to the tank. This will help keep your water clean and clear.4 Add the new substrate to one side of the tank, then slowly start moving fish over to that side using a net or other tool . CaribSea's Eco-Complete contains no artificial dyes. It is additionally free of nitrate and carbonate, so it won't alter the hardness or pH values of your aquarium water. It is available in a 20-pound bag.

Best Aquarium Plant Substrates - The Spruce Pets

Cloudy Fluval stratum waters won’t kill your fish, but you should wait until the water clears up before adding the tank inhabitants. If you’re looking to add Fluval Stratum to your existing tank, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, make sure that the stratum is compatible with your current substrate. Second, consider how much stratum you’ll need to achieve the desired effect. It would be your personal choice when it comes to rinsing the Fluval Stratum before putting it in your aquarium. Once you’ve confirmed that the stratum is dry, slowly add it to your tank using a funnel or similar device. You want to avoid adding too much at once, as this could cause an imbalance in your tank’s water chemistry. Start with a small amount and then monitor your fish closely over the next few days to make sure they’re adjusting well. Not only that, but it also aids in filtration and maintains healthy water conditions by providing beneficial bacteria with a place to thrive. How Long Does It Take Fluval Stratum to Settle? Avoid aggressive water changes – You don’t want to disturb your Fluval stratum too often. For this reason, you may need to perform more frequent water changes (1-2 times per week) for 10-15% of the total water volume. This is preferable to one 25% water change weekly since the latter can disturb the substrate in the process. Fluval Stratum can be used for a long period. Though, it will not always be as good as the first time you put it in your tank, of course.

PREVENT FISH DEATHS. How to Safely Add Substrate to an Established Aquarium. For Epic Planted Tanks!

The best substrate for cory catfish is sand, primarily for people who are on a budget. Small grain gravel types are a great choice, too, especially because plants prefer these. I used it to setup my recent tank. I certainly seen an effect on KH / DH from it. Takes my tap water from GH 12 KH 7, to GH 6 and 3 before weekly water change. Too early to say if it will continue (tank setup in Dec). I didn't rinse before use and saw no clouding of water. I don't think it made planting any easier or more difficult compared to gravel. So far so good, I would use again.

BUT—Truth be told… Whatever substrate you use that is not inert will STILL run out of nutrients at some point. Dirt, ADA soil, whatever.

Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum is a substrate with a slightly acidic ph which is ideal for most plants, tropical fish and shrimp normally kept in planted freshwater aquariums. It helps control organic discolouration and provides newborn shrimp with a refuge from predators. This mineral-rich volcanic soil is particularly good for use with natural driftwood as it will stop organic discolouration without removing the key nutrients from the wood. This soil is also beneficial for aquatic plants as plant roots easily penetrate and spread throughout, receiving the specially formulated Fluval plant micro-nutrients. What are the benefits of this substrate? Even after washing your Stratum, you will notice it still turns the water slightly cloudy when you fill your aquarium up for the first time. DO NOT PANIC! You will find that within 24 to 48 hours of your filter running the water becomes crystal clear. The substrate comes in quite dusty – You’ll have to wash this sand thoroughly before putting it in the tank, or the water will be full of dirt.
