About this deal

Arthur Onslow (1708), a great Speaker of the House of Commons, and Richard Bethell, who became Lord Chancellor as Lord Westbury in 1861, were members of the college.

The Graduate Centre is normally open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the year, except for a short period over Christmas and the New Year. There will be periods during the week when areas will need to be closed for a short time for cleaning. John Wilkins invited Robert Boyle to Oxford in 1653, writing that "[I] shall be most ready to provide the best accommodations for you, that this place will afford". [54] Boyle moved to Oxford in 1655, but preferred not to accept Wilkins's offer of accommodation, choosing instead to arrange his own rooms where he could carry out his scientific experiments. [55] Boyle became a member of the Oxford Philosophical Club that met weekly in Wilkins's chambers at Wadham, as did Robert Hooke who became Boyle's assistant after having been a chorister at Christ Church. Any request to re-arrange a tutorial time can only be accommodated in exceptional circumstances, and at the discretion of individual tutors. Students are further reminded of the common courtesies expected of them in classes and lectures, and are asked that where they wish to use electronic or smart devices in classes for genuine academic purposes (e.g. note-taking) they request permission from the tutor beforehand. Wadham is one of the largest colleges of the University of Oxford, with about 480 undergraduates and 240 graduate students. [2] The college publishes an annual magazine for alumni, the Wadham College Gazette. [7] Maurice Bowra was warden of the college from 1938 until 1970, and was influential in determining the character of the college as open and meritocratic. He was known for his hospitality but also for his waspish wit, and anecdotes about his time as Warden remain in circulation amongst Wadham alumni. A statue of Bowra is in the college gardens, and the college's 1992 Bowra Building bears his name. [ citation needed] Modern day [ edit ]

At Wadham, student welfare is genuinely a priority. The Student Union (SU) has four Welfare Officers who organise regular events like welfare brunch, Zumba and Yoga. The SU also has a Women’s Officer, an LGBTQIA Officer, a People of Colour and Racial Equality Officer, a Disabled Students Officer and a Trans Rep. There are also trained peer supporters who do regular drop-in sessions. Wadham has a Welfare Advisor, and Jane the chaplain is always on hand for a cup of tea and a chat, along with Maggie Mae, the college dog (although technically she is a ‘cat’). We also have a college tortoise called Archibald. Entertainment The Tutor for Welfare has strategic oversight of welfare matters and convenes termly welfare meetings; day-to-day responsibility for student welfare, including case management, rests with the College's Welfare Lead. Formal action starts with a report from the tutor(s) to the Tutor for Undergraduates. The Tutor for Undergraduates will usually be able to resolve the situation by meeting with the student and perhaps initiating a period of monitoring in the form of fortnightly reports from the student's tutors. Occasionally a student will be issued with a formal warning, or be required to appear before an Academic Panel. Anyone subject to such formal proceedings is issued with details of the procedure and of their obligations and rights (including the rights of appeal). For further information about the Academic Monitoring Procedures, please see appendix 4.

There are elected welfare officers on both the SU and MCR committees. There is a general welfare room, as well as a men's room and women's room. The college also has a nurse who runs an open surgery. [41] The Wadham Handbook is updated every summer and all students then become bound by the updated version. Typical changes might be including a new harassment policy or procedure, or updating information on student welfare provision. College rent and food charges are also revised in an agreed process involving current students, and all students then pay the updated charges. A number of computers are available in the College Library which allows access to SOLO, the Oxford Library Online Catalogue. All undergraduates are required to maintain a ‘satisfactory academic performance’ while on course. This means that students will:

Safety or emergency defects should be drawn to the attention of the Duty Receptionist. Reported defects will be graded by the Maintenance Operations Manager as to the degree of urgency, e.g. emergency, urgent and non-urgent. Under the original statutes, women were forbidden from entering the college, with the exception of a laundress who was to be of 'such age, condition, and reputation as to be above suspicion.' [10]

A College Advisor, normally a Fellow in a similar subject area, is allocated to each graduate student to provide support in matters of personal welfare and academic progress. While prime academic responsibility lies with the University, and in particular with the Faculty or Department Supervisor, College Advisors can offer less specialised help which may sometimes be useful for just that reason. In the exceptional case where a student does not get on with a supervisor, the advisor can give guidance on how to deal with the situation and, if necessary, on how to go about requesting a change of supervisor. In 1898, the hall was the third largest amongst Oxford colleges after Christ Church and New College. [13] It is notable for its great hammer-beam roof and for the Jacobean woodwork of the entrance screen. The portraits include those of the founders and of distinguished members of the college. The large portrait in the gallery is of John Lovelace, who held Oxford for William of Orange during the Revolution of 1688; the inscription records his role in freeing England 'from popery and slavery'. [20] Chapel [ edit ] Chapel Providing a ‘top-up’ clean in flat kitchens every two to three weeks. Residents will be responsible for regularly cleaning their kitchen/dining/living area and corridor, including removing all recyclable and general waste.

Originally a series of orchards and market gardens they have been restored and reshaped over the centuries. This mutual respect is rooted in the pursuit of academic excellence, which is ultimately what brings us all here. Over the next few years you will have a unique chance to challenge yourselves with new ideas, to learn from each other and from the world-class academics working at Oxford. That exchange of ideas and the freedom of thought and speech which underpins it, are something we cherish and uphold here. In vacations all students, except graduates and undergraduates taking University Examinations, are expected to vacate their rooms and remove all belongings by 10.00 am on Saturday of 8th week. Communal spaces are looked after by a ‘scout, usually a part time member of the Housekeeping team. They are required to report any damage, and those responsible will be charged on their battels for repairs, replacements, or exceptional cleaning; in extreme cases students may be denied further residence in College accommodation. If you live in College accommodation and watch live TV or catch up TV on BBC iPlayer in your own room, you need your own separate TV Licence. The college now consists of some 70 Fellows, about 230 graduate students, and about 450 undergraduates. The current Warden is Robert Hannigan. Hannigan succeeded Lord Macdonald of River Glaven QC as Warden upon Macdonald's retirement in 2021. [14] Promotion of equality, diversity and rights [ edit ]
