About this deal

This style of toilet is commonly seen in boats and caravans. They have a reservoir of water to flush the toilet, and a lower chamber containing neutralising chemicals into which the waste is directed when flushed. They may be too low to sit down on if used on their own, but they can be supplied with a frame that includes a platform on which to place the toilet and support rails either side. Their advantage over chemical commodes is that the waste is shut off within the lower compartment. The waste compartment needs to be emptied at regular intervals. A vertical rail at least 500mm long can be fixed at the entrance to the shower compartment for use when stepping in and out of the cubicle. The rail should be mounted at a height that the user can comfortably reach whilst stood both from outside the cubicle and from in the cubicle.

Seat hoists have an aperture seat instead of slings, so the user is transferred in a sitting position. Some may have the option of a commode pan. The hoist lifting mechanism is either operated manually using a winding handle or hydraulic pump, or it is battery powered. Height. Make sure the frame or rail is the correct height for you, so you can use the support safely and comfortably. For this, make sure to choose a system with an adjustable height. Cleanabillity. Although all high-quality bathroom aids are designed with hygiene in mind, it’s still worth thinking about how easy each toilet rail or frame will be to clean. Look for a system that’s free from things like unnecessary joints and gaps, which can collect dirt over time. These provide a horizontal bar in their lowered position. They should be fitted at waist/elbow level and approximately a fist width away from your thigh when sat on the toilet.

Mobile or wheeled commodes make it easier to position the commode close to the user for transfers. They can also be used as a transfer chair and some can be positioned over the toilet with the commode pan removed. The user and carer must ensure that the brakes are used when transferring on/off a wheeled commode. As the name implies, permanent toilet frames are designed to be permanently fixed to the bathroom floor. These frames can be a great option if you live alone, or use a separate bathroom to the other people you live with. Because they’re attached to the floor, permanent frames can also be a better option if you need to minimise your fall risk. (Type 2) Toilet safety rails may help you feel more confident, safe, and secure, plus they can ease stress and strain as you move from standing to seated positions. Some models attach to the toilet or the wall, while others are freestanding. Either way, you’ll want to choose a safety rail that’s secure, strong enough to support your body weight, and easy to install.

If you are still struggling to lower yourself down, even with additional support, it’s also worth considering a toilet frame with a built-in raised seat. Where minimising falls is especially important, make sure to choose a fixed option, rather than a freestanding system. Someone who is frail or very thin, or who needs to sit on the toilet for a while may need a more comfortable seat to sit on. Padded toilet seats that replace the existing seat,

Similarly to a toilet frame, toilet support rails are designed to offer extra stability while you are getting on and off the toilet. Support rails are usually fixed to the wall or floor (or both), and can often be folded out of the way when they’re not required. Although most rails are one-sided, there are also options for two-sided rails, which offer support on both sides of the toilet. Transferring on and off the toilet from a wheelchair is made easier if the seat heights of the wheelchair and the toilet are comparable. Different techniques may be employed: At Complete Care Shop, we have toileting aids for men and women, including male and female urinals and urinal bottles. We understand that men and women use the toilet differently, which is why we provide such variety in our range of toilet mobility aids. High-quality toilet mobility aids Horizontal rails may help when pushing up from sitting and provide support when lowering, e.g. on to a toilet. Most people find it easier to push down on a rail rather than pull on one, so horizontal rails are more commonly used.Alternatively, if there are no obstructions outside the bath (e.g. the sink or toilet) a vertical grab rail could be installed on the wall at the tap end of the bath. This is useful when stepping in and out of the bath and also to hold onto if standing to shower. H M Government (2016) Part M Building regulations - Access to and use of buildings.
