About this deal

Getting started at my first attempt with the crystal clay I was careful to read the instructions properly and followed them throughout, but as I said earlier, this product is so easy to work with that there wasn’t a whole lot to follow. There are really only two very important factors to take into consideration; one is to wear the gloves provided with the clay as the epoxy resin can cause irritation to some people. I value my hands too much to ignore this instruction and wore the gloves throughout the whole process. And the second is to mix the parts in equal quantities otherwise the finished clay will not set properly. Apply your varnish according to the label directions. Make sure that as you paint or spray the varnish onto your pottery, you’re reaching all the crevices, divots, and corners that may exist in your piece. Air-dry clay has a much softer feeling, like Play-Doh or Model Magic. It’s more moldable than pottery clay and is more flexible to work with. When varnishing flat pieces, our choice is most often spraying. Once you develop the technique it is really fast and easy to do. The secret is using long sweeping strokes.

Due to its delicate and absorbing nature, air dry clay can never truly be waterproof. However, there are seals and finishes you can apply to air-dry clay to give it a water-resistant quality. It won’t be able to hold water for a long period of time but will withstand a rainstorm or light washing. Acrylic paint will seal air dry clay but only to a certain extent. Most acrylic paint is water-resistant but will not make your air-dry clay pots waterproof. Unlike polymer clay, air dry clay is water-soluble. To be made waterproof it has to be completely coated with a waterproof coating like epoxy or polyurethane. Most Acrylic paints, including outdoor acrylics, are water-resistant not waterproof. Will Air-Dry Clay dissolve in water? The first thing is you can’t rush the drying of your clay. Our best advice is to allow your air-dry clay projects to dry according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and then give them an extra 24-48 hours to make sure it is completely dry.Yes, many air-dry clays are flammable. That is why they should never be heated past 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 Celsius). Exceeding these temperatures can result in the spontaneous combustion of your work. Does baking air-dry clay make it stronger? In this category, you’ll find artists’ acrylic varnishes, craft store varnishes, and polymer clay brand glazes. Acrylic varnishes contain acrylic polymer emulsion, which is an acrylic resin suspended in water. To save costs, they may also contain vinyl acrylic, vinyl stearate, vinyl acetate, polyurethane, or even polyvinyl acetate (PVA, such as in white glue). The specific formulas are usually a secret, so you’ll never know exactly what is in the varnish you choose. Due to the mixing process of epoxy resin or just due to the act of pouring itself, it’s common for resin to have lots of small bubbles. These need to be popped before you cure the resin. The best way I’ve found to remove bubbles is as follows: I was delighted to receive a little parcel in the post and on opening it found 3 pendants of various shapes and sizes, 3 different types o f rings, 2 bracelets and 4 different coloured clays with a huge assortment of round crystals or “chatons” to play with. FDA 21 CFR 175.300 compliant for food safety, EnviroTex Lite Epoxy Resin is ideal for creating air-dry clay candy dishes and similar projects. It is self-leveling, water-proof, and has a very high gloss.

If satisfied with the appearance of your project after the initial coat of sealer, apply further coats to achieve the look you are looking for. Pros: Easy once you know how, has a wonderful feel. Removes flaws and textures. No worries about chemical incompatibility. There are also opaque and tinted sealants available or you can create them on your own by blending clear sealants and paints.

UV resin uses ultraviolet light to trigger, or catalyze, the chemical reaction that causes the resin to become hard. You can use a light with a special ultraviolet bulb, such as a nail lamp or an ultraviolet flashlight. Because the sun also emits ultraviolet light, you can use the sun to cure your UV resin as well. I have the Lisa Pavelka UV Light and it works well. Common brands of epoxy resin are Envirotex Lite, Easy Cast, Amazing Clear Cast, Little Windows, and ICE Resin. Doming, Coating, and Casting Resins Resin has a bit of a learning curve, and many people prefer not to use it because it can trigger intense allergies. It eventually will turn yellow. While it’s usually easy to remove bubbles that rise to the surface, it’s not uncommon for more bubbles or odd swirls to form during curing. Once coated with resin, you cannot rebake your pieces.

Because waxes apply as a microscopically thin layerto polymer clay, they will do nothing to protect mica powder, glitter, paint, or metal leaf from wear or abrasion and can even remove them. You will not get a glossy shine with a wax. Instead, you’ll get a burnished sheen, but only when used on an already smooth surface.Wax applied to a textured surface will be white and unattractive. We recommend liquid epoxy resin for those who are experienced in working with resin, or those who are looking to display their pottery outdoors and want a higher level of long-term water-resistant protection. You have three basic options when you seal air-dry clay. You can brush on the sealant, spread it with a sponge, or use a spray-on varnish. There are pluses and minuses to all three methods and the best to use is largely a matter of taste. For best results, we recommend using a clear polyurethane varnish to seal your air-dry clay. This will provide a layer of protection against water and dust without altering the look of your pottery. Another thing to think about is how you will apply the finish to your projects. The three most commonly used methods for sealing air dry clay are by spraying, brushing, or with a sponge.
