Once the wall is correctly cleaned down you will need to remove any air vents and extend them out and also any window sills if they are particularly shallow e.g. bring them out to the new surface level of the finished wall. Similarly, it does not matter if there is a week or two between the first coat and the second coat as long as the same dampness is applied to the wall before the second coat is applied. Single Coat Render (Monocouche): As you may guess from the name, this is a render that’s applied in a single coat and can be trowelled or sprayed on to the wall. In most cases they are based on a standard cement render and come pre-mixed so all you do is add water. They are very low maintenance so generally don’t need repair and can also come coloured so no need for paintingThe final stage in the rendering process is sponge the surface over. Many renderers will use an ordinary large car sponge which is very slightly damp, to give a final pass to the wall. Follow recommended ratios to achieve the correct consistency when mixing sand and cement. Avoid excessively dry or wet mixes. As it sets, the dried cement resembles concrete, which makes sanding the render particularly difficult. Although expertly using the sponge float will give you a semi-smooth finish, the walls will probably still be a bit rough to the touch. If your proposed rendering will cover more than 25% of the wall you may have to upgrade the wall to comply with current insulation requirements if this is possible. Either grey or white cement can be used. The white gives a brighter finish but it is a little more expensive. Sharp sand is usually used instead of builder's sand because the grit in it helps to repel moisture and it creates a stronger mix. The stone sizes can vary depending on what you want, but the colour of them doesn't matter because they will be mixed in and covered with the cement anyway. Many people also add a waterproofer into the mix so that moisture will be less likely to seep into the cement later.
