About this deal

Zanon, Johanna " La face cachée de la Lune: les ateliers de couture de la maison Jean Patou dans l’entre-deux-guerres", in Apparence(s) 7 (2017). I have had a small travel-sized atomizer of Sublime by Jean Patou for a couple of years--I keep it in a drawer and put it on sometimes as a mild mood elevator. I'm not 100% sold on the intense citrus blast at the beginning, but it doesn't take too long for it to calm down and reveal its subtler, more long-lasting notes: jasmine, along with a bit of that intoxicating bracing medicinal odor, the note that elevates Guerlain's L'Heure Bleue from merely pretty to, well, sublime. For me Sublime by Jean Patou doesn't quite live up to that classic fragrance, but it's still more wonderful than 99% of the smells out there. The powdery drydown is a nice, clean, classic-soap smell, like fresh laundry and cedar drawer-liner paper.

In about 10 minutes Jasmine appears with heady flowers - lilac? hyacinth? - twined, while the myrhh and bergamot provide a character-filled depth to the florals. This is a rich, ambery perfume; aware, considered and with great depth. The first masculine fragrance of the Heritage collection is Jean Pаtou Pour Homme. It has a quite modern equivalent; it is the same age as the Moscow Olympics and it was released in 1980. It may sound strange, but it was the first masculine fragrance launched by Jean Patou. Jean loved women that much—all his perfumes were devoted to women. But Patou Pour Homme was finally devoted to Jean Patou himself: Vintages and classics are a corner of the perfume world I'm not particularly drawn to. It's not that I dislike them, but apart from the practical difficulties, they're often the kind of scents I appreciate on others more than I want to wear them myself: however different their note lists, their vibe is often similar - feminine, mature, sophisticated, elegant. All qualities I appreciate, but can't say I possess myself. It's the same with this Sublime, which I got as an extra somewhere quite by chance, and which I think smells like it's been around longer than its 26 years: I like it, I appreciate its quality, and I enjoyed feeling like someone else for a while, but in the end it's just not really my thing and so I don't think I'll reach for my decant very often in the future.

Eau de Patou is luminous and vibrant. It conveys a sense of relaxation and rest. It was originally created in 1976 as a fragrance that will be a favorite both to men and women. Its composition gives a sense of freedom present throughout the day. Bright and luminous fruit notes shine with drops of bergamot, Sicilian citrus, Guinea orange and sweet lime mixed with peppery lavender and orange blossom. This fragrance is delightfully fresh yet sophisticated in the manner of Jean Patou. This, to me, is French. This is beauty. Ever evolving, this is warm, Golden vanilla Amber powder. Divine. It slowly does take you higher...

Kerleo stepped down in 1999 [6] appointing Jean-Michel Duriez as house perfumer. Duriez creations include "Un Amour de Patou" (1998), "Enjoy" (2003) and "Sira des Indes" (2006). I start to feel after the first outburst some kind of soapy notes and I must say I'm not a fan of soapy notes, but in Sublime they are hidden well, so I don't feel that they are too much and it does not resemble expensive soap as so many soapy fragrances does for me. I will enjoy my sample while it lasts but with such poor longevity it is a no buy despite the beautiful scent.

I bought this because I fell head over heels with Joy and on first impressions it smells very similar. On the dry down this one is brighter, almost like hazy sunshine in a bottle. It has a very addictive edge to it and I can't stop savouring it on my wrist as I delight in searching out its intricacies. It reminds me of a new lover - the frisson of anticipation, the way they dress, and move and breathe. This is pre coitus ; Joy is afterwards when you lie entwined and your body smells are heady and you wonder just what sorcery brought you here.
