R.I.P. John Lennon 1940-1980 I think that the first idea of the writing of the song 'Imagine' came from the song 'What's Going On' written and sung by Marvin Gaye in 1971. Because the song 'What's Going On' was very famous for writing against the Vietnam war and became a big hit at that time. So everyone must had known about the song. So had John, too. Also 'What's Going On' was released in Jan. 1971. John started recording the album 'Imagine' in June 1971, according to Wiki. If it was true, I think John must had been influenced by the song 'What's Going On'. The rest is history.
