About this deal

There are cars with standard spring rear suspensions which can cope with high nose weights of up to and exceeding 150kg. Some gauges feature a digital reader, and some older gauges may look like a Newton Meter. Fortunately, most noseweight gauges are relatively cheap and easy to use. It’s recommended that you use one stamped with the British Standard mark, as these are known to be reliable and accurate. The best that anybody can hope for is a mean starting figure but I should imagine that the variation will be more than the tolerance for any measuring device. Lateral instability is also caused by incorrect nose weight, causing your caravan to sway from side to side. This can be dangerous, especially if you’re travelling at speed. Ways to Measure Caravan Nose Weight

Another reason for ensuring your caravan nose weight is right is due to the threat of pitching and lateral instability. Pitching is where your caravan will bob up and down when you’re towing it. The amount of bobbing that happens will be dependent on the amount the caravan is from its max and min nose weight rating. The severity of pitching will also be affected on the speed that you’re towing. Peter – As long as the noseweight is within the recommended limits then shouldn’t be an issue with it being a Twin Axle. As you say they do carry weight better but also weigh more themselves making the 85% loading rule more of an issue than noseweight.

What is a caravan’s noseweight?

I should also point out that all noseweights can have a wide variation in interpretation. The Caravan Club says that the noseweight can be between 5-7 per cent of its MTPLM. Hence for a caravan with an MTPLM of 1500kg it could vary between 75kg and 105kg!

Position the piece of wood on the scales. This is to spread the load and reduce the risk of damage to your scales. Load the caravan to its MTPLM in the typical method; park it on a flat, hard, level surface area-- concrete or tarmac, not turf-- with the steadies raised Milenco's Precision Calibrated Noseweight Gauge (main picture) is the only piece of apparatus to be approved and calibrated to British Standard BS7691, and has proven accuracy within 2 kilos, even after 1,000 uses. The scale goes up to 130 kiloshere is a BS standard that was created for noseload gauges" Once you have the above information, you’ll need a handy gadget called a noseweight gauge. A noseweight gauge is a device that tells you whether or not you’re exceeding the noseweight limit. One of the most efficient ways of measuring this is to use a Caravan noseweight gauge. There are currently some excellent products on the market – below we take a look at five popular models currently available to buy online. However, the severity of pitching can also change depending on other factors, such as towing speed. An incorrect caravan noseweight is not the primary cause of lateral instability. However, it can be a factor. The effects aren’t just limited to the towing vehicle. If you have a twin axle caravan that is over the noise weight limits, then this can lead to uneven and unwanted tire wear. If the nose weight is too high, then less pressure and weight will be on the rear axle. This means that the rear axle tires will experience less rear, but the front axle tires will bear the majority of the wear, tear and pressure. Many caravan manufacturers will provide details on the minimum and maxium nose weights for specific caravans.

I had the first that Niall recommended and cannot agree with his recommendation. Using it to measure the noseweight of my caravan three times in the same place, I got three different readings that ranged from just over 50 kg to just under 80 kg. The severity of the pitching will depend on how far off the caravan is from its minimum and maxium rating noseweight rating. any other limiting factors should also be considered in the assessment/adjustment of the noseweight of the In the case of an electronic gauge, this is fitted onto the towball on the tow car and the caravan is then hitched to it. The noseweight is displayed on the screen. The appropriate nose weight for the caravan is the lowest of 3 nose weight figures: that of the caravan chassis manufacturer, the tow car company, and the towbar for cars and towbars for motorhomes manufacturers.
