What it means to identify as queer differs by person, it’s an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of sexual orientations and gender identities, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, asexual, amongst many others.

In this graphic memoir, Alison Bechdel explores her relationship to fitness, self-awareness, and authors of the past. Several different people shine a light on the legend of Charlie Parker’s time in California. This is part biography, part historical fiction, all love letter to jazz. By the end of the manga, Kabi realizes that until now she had taken for granted that although she knew herself to be mentally ill, at least her body worked properly, but now she feels old and broken. Unsurprisingly, in the last stretch of this manga she opens up about wishing to die, and how her life is a cycle of wanting to disappear and justifying her existence through creating art. This latest entry in Kabi's descent ends with her hoping to move forward somehow in her quest to find someone to love, as a thirty something years old lesbian, alcoholic, ADHD/anxiety sufferer, possibly autistic (I feel that kind of kinship with her, from the first volume) manga author who may only be capable of creating meaningful art about her private disasters. Following the life of a pianist turned showman, this fictional biography explores the intricacies of relationships, art, and life. Nagata Kabi's work is important. It's not the kind of thing you read for enjoyment or entertainment. Instead both books she's put out so far are both cathartic as well as emotionally draining. You experience her pain, her frustration, her struggle to do little more than just be able to function knowing exactly how she feels. There's always something in her books that the reader can empathize with and as I've said, that experience is both cathartic as well as emotionally draining.

In the first book, My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, she depicts her experience with paying an escort to spend time with her. She makes it clear she mainly just wants to be hugged, she feel so touch-deprived. Maybe part of the initial interest in the manga came from curiosity about escorts, which is of course a common thing, but not much written about? But it's not that revealing, if you are looking for something along those lines.
