They are big birds and need to eat a lot. They also have a crop. This is a pouch in the throat, a bit like a doggy bag. It means that when their stomachs are full, they don’t need to stop eating. They can carry on eating the food available, fill up their crop, then digest the extra food later.But if keeping predators and larger birds at bay is an issue, then a cage ground feeder could be an option. I love to watch the birds taking their time eating ,looking around and knowing that they are safe from prediators and larger birds. Pay close attention to the measurements because while the picture makes the feeder appear bigger, generally all mesh trays are smaller than they look.

Magpies are quite big birds and extremely clever and adaptable. This sanctuary allows you to adjust the mesh width on the sides to decide who's allowed in: just small birds, or small and medium birds, but not larger birds (such as pigeons) and most adult squirrels. When we think of attracting birds to the garden, our first thought is probably to hang up a feeder. The key is to choose a model where the feeding platform is not too high off the ground. Many of our smaller ground-feeding birds will be happy on a feeding platform that’s just 4 or 5 foot above ground level. So our Bath Universal Bird Table, for example, is a great option. Not so tall as to be daunting for the smaller ground feeders and open-sided to allow access for bigger birds.
