About this deal

One standard method is to use a piece of lettuce as bait. Place the lettuce in a jar or container and leave it in the tank overnight. The snails will be attracted to the lettuce and crawl into the pot, where they can then be removed in the morning. In case you want something a bit stronger, consider using one part of bleach mixed with nineteen parts of water.

If you notice snails in your tank but you didn’t intentionally add them to the aquarium, they probably came with plants or decorations. If you are determined to ban pet snails from your home, remember the saying “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.” Carefully inspect any new plants, and manually remove all snails and snail eggs. Some people run their plants under running water to help wash away any unseen hitchhikers. Then place the plant in a quarantine tank with light and fertilizers, and continuously remove any snails that appear. Snail eggs can take 1-4 weeks to hatch, depending on the species and water temperature, so this process requires some patience. Not just that, but such chemicals can kill lots of snails at once. This will release ammonia which is highly toxic to fish. Many times when you have a sudden influx of snails you also have an algae overgrowth. Snails will thrive in an environment filled with algae. This is like a never-ending buffet for them!Push the bottle in the tank’s substrate, turned upside-down (the “entrance” of the trap should be slightly buried). Getting rid of snails might sound cruel. They are living creatures that are inhabiting your tank, just like fish or shrimp. The next method might be to use improvised snail traps. No, I am not talking about devices similar to mouse traps, although a few such products exist. A simple lettuce leaf will do.

That’s why every once in a while, I intentionally add Assassin snails, Nerite, or Mystery snails to my freshwater fish tanks. They are not a bother as long as they don’t reproduce too fast or leave unsightly eggs that will never hatch in the aquarium.

Method #3: Snail Trap

While there are several treatment solutions out there, one that I found helpful is a hydrogen peroxide mix. Overfeeding your fish will likely lead to leftover food in the aquarium. Most aquatic pest snails have no problem surviving off of uneaten fish food. Add snail-eating fish such as Yoyo loaches or clown loaches,” Yarbrough says. “If you minimize feedings, the loaches will stay hungry and eat snails more effectively.” Loaches make a meal of eggs as well as adult snails. 4. Introduce snail traps

You can typically get a read-made snail trap from any pet store or even online. However, I find it more practical to build my own. You’ll be left with an aquarium full of dead snails, which can spoil the water’s quality. Don’t overfeed your fishIf you are a longtime aquarist or are planning to be one, chances are you have either experienced or will experience a snail infestation in your aquarium. Fish and snails are two of the most common types of pets. Both are relatively easy to care for and can provide hours of enjoyment.
