In the mouth: A thinnish mouthfeel on arrival but gain fairly sweet with honey, malt, vanilla and orchard fruit. Some lemon before the spice builds – light pepper with grassy, green raw malt. In 2013 the Italian company Illva Saronno, owners of Tia Maria, took a 50% stake in Walsh Whiskey for €25 million and the company soon began construction of a new Irish distillery in Co. Carlow, which was completed in 2016. In 2019, however, the partnership was dissolved, with the Walshes keeping their brands and relinquishing their stake in the Royal Oak distillery to Saronno. Malt, caramel, toffee, orchard fruit, vanilla, dynamic dark sweets, creamy vanilla and some copper with a bit of lemon and hazelnuts. I’m a bit surprised by the richness. Writers’ Tears is a range of independently bottled Irish whiskey by Walsh Whiskey, a company founded by husband and wife team Rosemary and Bernard Walsh in 1999 to market their Hot Irishman brand of bottled Irish Coffee. The Walshes introduced The Irishman Irish cream liqueur in 2005, and the following year, having secured a supply deal with Midleton distillery, The Irishman brand pivoted towards independent whiskey bottling with the launch of The Irishman Founders Reserve whiskey.

The Walsh’s clever twist on Irish whiskey blending was to eschew the use of grain whiskey in their creations. The Irishman whiskey began as a blend of single malt and single pot still whiskeys, and soon added small batch or single cask Irish single malts under the same brand. As one of Walsh Whiskey’s core expressions, Writers’ Tears Double Oak is available to all markets, and will be first available in the USA, Russia, UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands & Ireland (including Dublin Airport). In the mouth: Quite a chocolate note on arrival then stone fruit. Plum, peach and then the white grape again. Some citrus zest with mild baking spice, oak tannins and a touch of cask char. Away from the writers’ enjoyment of a dram, the Irish whiskey barons were rebelling against the emergence of what they saw as inferior grain from Coffey Stills. The barons were protective of the traditions that had made their success possible and at that time, one whiskey style was held high above all others. Known as the ‘champagne of Irish whiskey’ it was a master blend of pot still and malt whiskeys, both distilled in copper pots. It was enjoyed by many of the great Irish writers of the day… of course less for its inspirational qualities than its full-bodied, flavoursome taste and creamy texture! It was said that they enjoyed it so much, that when they cried, their tears were of whiskey. Through its partnership with the Legaret family, Walsh Whiskey recently introduced French oak to followers of the Writers’ Tears portfolio with the limited release of Writers’ Tears Cognac Cask. Encouraged by it’s success, Bernard Walsh decided to make French oak a permanent feature in the Writers’ Tears portfolio through the introduction of Writers’ Tears Double Oak.If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. On the nose: Slightly floral but very fruity – orchard fruit abundant, apples, a hint of peach and loads of stewed pears. Vanilla, white grape too. Some spice builds with cinnamon and nutmeg along with some caramel sweetness. Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. On the nose: A definite sandalwood note on the nose along with pine, white chocolate and caramel. Underneath this are flashes of apple and pear and eventually some citrus zest. The nose does feel rather tight and closed though. Water does improve things making the nose more overtly fruity with dry woody spice and citrus oils. Finally, we have the Writers’ Tears Copper Pot Japanese Cask finish. Aged in ex-bourbon barrels before a 9-month finish in one of two Japanese Mizunara Oak casks. This expression was bottled at a healthy 55% abv and was launched in time for Ireland's much hyped trip to the Rugby World Cup finals. Our journey has led us to: On the nose: Quite a green and spicy nose. Green apples, lemon thyme, green wood and pot still spice. Honey sweetness comes through in time with malt and a hint of mint. Light milk chocolate notes with new leather too.Malt, caramel, vanilla beans, toffee, fruit, oily spice and a bit of copper. It might be a bit limited in scope, but the richness of what’s there is quite nice. Double Oak is the third core expression in the Writers’ Tears range which includes the Copper Pot and Cask Strength versions. It is the 14 th expression in the wider Walsh Whiskey portfolio, including the extended Writers’ Tears and The Irishman ranges. Walsh Whiskey has developed a range of Writers’ Tears whiskey, including four core offerings, three limited special cask finishes, and a cask strength release. The Writer’s Tears Cask Strength expression, the subject of today’s review, is a blend of Single Pot Still and Single Malt Whiskey, all triple distilled, non-chill filtered, and aged in American Oak Bourbon barrels. A mixed bag with definite peaks and troughs from the folk at Walsh Whiskey but the stars of the show being the core range expressions rather than the Travel Retail exclusive. This is a light nose, indicative of its 80 proof.
