About this deal

The second edition used the same die cast box, but the printed graphics changed. There were four rubber feet glued to the bottom of the box, prone to falling off, the same as previous editions. The most coveted of all the Muffs, the early 70s Ram’s Head was used by David Gilmour for his epic, singing lead tone. The Ram’s head is articulate and very loud, with a bit of vintage “spittiness.” David Gilmour’s Big Muff tones are based on mid range oriented Hiwatt amps and a volume that creates a lot of tube and speaker compression. This is crucial for getting that smooth violin like sustain. A Big Muff tend to sound either very harsh or muddy otherwise, which isn’t necessarily bad but not quite what you want for your Gilmour tones.

Common named "Civil War" because of graphical design, made in Russia. It has blue and white chassis, and used the same circuit as the "Red Army Overdrive" and "Green Russian". I would like to try it with a BK Butler Tube Driver at some point but was wondering if my heavily modified DOD YJM308 pedal would produce the boosted tones to help out the Patriot. Electro-Harmonix had to temporarily stop its activities in 1982. The 80s were therefore not a productive year for the Muff. Only a new version of the Deluxe Big Muff Pi was released in 1980. Several Muff clones were released in the 1980s. However, demand for the Muff remained at an all-time high and EHX reintroduced the pedal in the 1990s. 90s

The well-known and infamous Ram’s Head version of the pedal. This is the first version with the well-known ’47’ circuit. 1976 – Big Muff Pi (V3) The third version of the Muff was released and the Little Muff Pi was also released in the same year. This is an op-amp version of the little Muff Pi, originally from 1971. A 1-button version, the Little Big Muff, was also released that year. It was a version with transistors. 1978 – Big Muff Pi V4 en V5 Five years later, the first compact version of the Muff was released, the Little Big Muff. 2007 – Big Muff Pi USA reissue V9

Enclosure Size: 6 1/2" long x 4 3/4" wide x 2 3/4" tall / 165mm long x 118mm wide x 70mm tall (not including rubber feet) Sometimes called the "Op-Amp". This version features one less gain stage and Op-Amp chip circuitry, but is housed in the same classic enclosure as its predecessor, the 1977 V3.

Other Electro-Harmonix effects that were direct ancestors to the Big Muff were their Axis Fuzzand the Foxey Lady, which Mike Matthews manufactured for another brand, Guild. Electro-Harmonix Green Russian Big Muff it has that same, vintage-correct military green chassis. Simple Controls and True Bypass

The pedal was designed in 1969 by Bob Myers and Mike Matthews and now has many different versions. In the overview below a brief history of the pedal is presented. Not all versions of the pedal are included here, which is impossible. Furthermore, the exact year of some pedals can no longer be found. The year that the pedal was published according to most connoisseurs has been chosen. The success of the Muff was in the special sound, but also in the reliability and price/quality ratio. Axis Fuzz was the founder of the Big Muff Shown above - (left) An original Sovtek Green Russian with the Green Russian reissue, and (right) EHX engineer ENCLOSURE BOX - The first editions had the same four-screw, die cast boxes with ridged-sides and sheet metal tops as the previous Green Civil War version, and the same plastic battery door cover. Some of the first editions had the ridges polished off like the Civil War Muffs, although this was rare. These boxes were finished rough, with sloppy clean up of the mold flashing. With the Green Russian Reissue, you'll be treading a fine line between overdrive, distortion and fuzz, giving you a classic, robust yet unhingedsound that edges you closer and closer to the danger zone! Specifications Peace, sorry to go on about one pedal, but Stu nailed the exact sound we asked him to emulate, and I don’t know how he did it, but it’s so very easy to dial in those DG Muff tones from 77-80.Depite theirpopularity, Electro Harmonix's iterations of the Big Muff have always remained affordable. With most models featuring a versatile tone knob that can take you from doomy sub-harmonic tones to searing high-end, they also boast sustain and volume controls.

Again this pedal is just incredible and I am excited learning the songs it deserves to be played on. Although a Big Muff can replicate David’s earlier tones, as he himself has done on recent tours, I wouldn’t recommend using a fuzz to replicate the Big Muff tones of Animals, The Wall and onwards. A rusty sounding fuzz just doesn’t sound right for Dogs and Comfortably Numb. Big Muff on the pedalboard The EQ even helped me overcome the problems that are inherent in using an attenuator. My little 4watt amp is still too loud for home use so I’m forced to attenuate to a large degree (all the way down to 1 in fact). This has the unwanted affect of reducing treble. For Muff nerds only. The BM-20 comes with dip switches on the front that allow you to change the Muff circuit at 20 different points. Combined with the tone bypass option and silicon and germanium transistor switching, you have over 4 million unique settings available. Fuzz pedals are amongst the simplest of circuits and the price inflation as a result of EHX not being in the market was getting ridiculous.
