About this deal

Hawke has cited his own children and the rules of his home as inspiration for Rules for a Knight. He stated in an interview with The New Yorker, "What has been valuable about [the book] for me was that it gave me an excuse and permission to bring up subject matters that are very difficult to talk about with kids." Cooperation– Young Thomas's grandfather takes on another squire, who outshines Thomas in many tasks. Thomas is plagued by jealousy until the sudden death of the other squire. Upon this tragedy, Thomas realizes that his jealousy of the second squire improved his own skills. the first thing you must understand is that you need not have gone anywhere. You are always in the right place at exactly the right time and you always have been." pg 11 As you grow into maturity, do not concern yourself with aging. A rose is striking in full bloom only because it will never be so again, but a budding rose is also stunning, as are the dark petals of autumn. It is the fact that time is passing that creates its preciousness. A preoccupation with aesthetic beauty can be a distraction that leads young people away from pursuing a sincere exploration of their inner lives."

I began and completed this feel-good gem all in one afternoon! Behold some of my favourite passages in the form of a list of rules written by a knight in the early 1400’s to guide his children! Genius! Justice– Young Thomas and his grandfather come upon a village which has been upset by a recent number of dead animals floating down a nearby river. Hawke's grandfather suggests that the confused people go upriver to find the source. To head north, a knight may use the North Star to guide him, but he will not arrive at the North Star. A knight’s duty is only to proceed in that direction. Each one of us is walking our own road. We are born at specific times, in specific places, and our challenges are unique. As knights, understanding and respecting our distinctiveness is vital to our ability to harness our collective strength. The use of force may be necessary to protect in an emergency, but only justice, fairness, and cooperation can truly succeed in leading men. We must live and work together as brothers or perish together as fools. It’s difficult to explain, but in some ways it can be easy to be supportive when your friend is hurt or sad. You may find it is more challenging to be wholeheartedly supportive when extreme good fortune befalls a friend and not you. An imagined father, Sir Thomas Lemuel Hawke, wrote a letter to his children outlining the Rules for a Knight, in 1483, a night before he went to the Battle of Slaughter Bridge, where he was among those killed. He had foreseen this outcome and as a result had written the letter, which contain life lessons he wished to pass along to his children. In early 1970s the letter, severely damaged, was revised and reconstructed into the book The 20 Rules for a Knight by Ethan Hawke, who discovered it in the basement of the family farm near Waynesville, after the passing away of his great-grandmother. The idea excited him and he started applying the rules to his household.

Those who cannot easily forgive will not collect many friends. Look for the best in others and yourself. There is no such thing as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A hurried mind is an addled mind; it cannot see clearly or hear precisely; it sees what it wants to see, or hears what it is afraid to hear, and misses much. A knight makes time his ally. There is a moment for action, and with a clear mind that moment is obvious. Equality: Every knight holds human equality as an unwavering truth. A knight is never present when men or women are being degraded or compromised in any way, because if a knight were present, those committing the hurtful acts or words would be made to stop. The primary goal of knighthood was to uphold the dignity of the Church. The foundation of chivalry was Christianity as it was created by the church, for the church, and through the church.
