About this deal

In an episode of Mr. Bean: The Animated Series, the Queen of the United Kingdom sings a portion of the song with a piano accompaniment. [ citation needed] Bobby Vinton recorded "Beer Barrel Polka" in 1975. The song was released as the follow-up single to his multi-million selling " My Melody of Love" and reached number 33 on the Billboard, number 45 on the Cashbox Top 40 hit charts and number 51 in Australia. [8] The success of the single, which was particularly popular on jukeboxes, led to its inclusion on Vinton's Heart of Hearts album in 1975. Printed sources: - Breathnach ( Ceol Rince na hÉireann vol. As a landlord you spend many hours rolling those metal beer containers around your cellar but have you ever stopped to think about why they are that shape and size. The owner was stubborn. Dad came away barrelless and angry, at what he considered a mean injustice. It wasn’t just the money. There was a lot of pride, principle at stake now. The rather flexible moral code of that time and area demanded that barrels must now be pinched.

In the Hogan's Heroes season 1 episode "Papa Schultz - Top Hat, White Tie and Bomb Sights", Colonel Hogan convinces the Luftwaffe that he knows the details of the Norden Bombsight and has pro-Nazi leanings. To firm up the subterfuge, Colonel Hogan describes a vacuum cleaner named "The Norden" in front of a wiretap with the prisoner crew singing "Beer Barrel Polka" loudly, interrupting lines of dialog. Commandant Klink believes the performance because the various details not covered up by singing appear to describe a bombsight. [ citation needed] Traditionally flat stillage is the preferred method as already mentioned, the design of the barrel facilitates the best removal of the yeast sediment. However, in cellars where space is a premium upright stillage may be adopted as an alternative method. The metal spear is designed to be inserted into the barrel via the keystone and lowered to the bottom then slightly raised to lie above the sediment level, however it is not always easy to determine this and coupled with the fact that you cannot sample the beer prior to connecting to the beer lines means you can run the risk of getting cloudy beer into the lines. The second method using the floating widget alleviates this problem as the widget is designed to float on the top of the beer with its outlet just under the surface. However, it brings its own issues as you are always taking beer from the top where it is starting to oxidise and you can pull air into your beer lines causing the hand pulls to become “spongy” when operated. As they say sometimes needs must and with careful use the two upright dispense methods can be used successfully in smaller cellars. There are three main methods of dispensing beer, flat stillage via a cask tap, upright stillage via a metal spear or a plastic floating widget. He was a character, my Dad. Best bloke I’ve ever met. Best father anyone could ever have. Pity he never wrote really. Because he was a born verbal storyteller. I grew up listening to his tales. Glad of it too. They enriched me. Just as he did.John Serry Sr. arranged and recorded the polka for accordion and ensemble for RCA Thesaurus (1954). In 2005 the tune of "Beer Barrel Polka" became the main inspiration for the theme tune for Marvel Comics's The Fantastic Four movie and can be heard throughout. [ citation needed]

The standard size for cask beer is a firkin, meaning forth of a barrel ( middle dutch) and contains 9 gallons. The next size is a kilderkin, meaning half a barrel ( middle dutch) and contains 18 gallons. Next up is a barrel which is 36 gallons and then you have a hogshead, (originally called an oxhead due to the fact that they were branded with the sign of an ox head) and these contain 54 gallons. Two sizes that you never see in pubs are a butt which is two hogsheads, 108 gallons and a tun which is two butts or 216 gallons. In fact some brewers have gone the other way into smaller containers and send their beer out in a pin which is half a firkin or 4.5 gallons. These can also be made of plastic and if they are they are called polypins. The films in Roll Out The Barrel are fascinating for the cultural change – and continuity - they show. But they're perhaps even more fascinating because of what they are striving to depict. Whatever its original purpose may have been – commercial, propagandist, ethnographic or artistic – each, in its own way, represents a kind of national self-portrait: clumsy/polished/cynical/naïve, ultimately hopeless, attempts to define who 'we', the British, are. It is useful to remember these sizes, it’s very common for landlords to talk about selling 10 barrels a week when they actually mean 10 firkins. The difference between 2880 pints and 720 pints is a lot! It was some time after this that my Dad decided to organize street A.R.P. patrols. The phrases ‘bolting horses’ and ‘stable door’ do spring to mind perhaps. But then, during those hectic days, the fact that you’d been bombed once was no guarantee that you couldn’t be again.

It is sung in the final scene of the Rumpole of the Bailey television episode, "Rumpole and the Alternative Society" (1977). [ citation needed] Bill may have reflected that he’d already heard this airy promise once tonight, and that it hadn’t worked out too well. He wasn’t keen to see it tested again, but eventually gave in.As I said dad could be persuasive. In the end, he even managed to enlist this reluctant confederate. And so, the early hours of a freezing cold morning saw these two stealthily scaling the Everest of drums. In the 2022 Dreamworks animated film, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Papa Bear of the "Three Bears Crime Family" gives another character, Mama Luna, the "piano treatment" which involves him playing her piano which she was thrown into while he sings a jaunty rendition of this song.
