About this deal

Jean Patou remained a family-owned business until September 2001 when it was bought by P&G Prestige Beaute a division of Procter & Gamble, which also market perfumes for Jean Kerléo and Karl Lagerfeld. When I re-opened my eyes, I realized that I had pushed the bottle opening up my little 8 yr old nostril. It was pure magic, I couldn't get enough of the scent! I took the bottle out, and with a sheepish grin I wiped it off as well as I could and inadvertently spilled a little bit on my shirt. Knowing I would undoubtedly get caught, I ran over to the laundry room and threw my shirt in the washer and changed shirt. I passed by my Great-Grandmother and she gave me that knowing look. I told her what I did and she just shook her head and told me not to do it again. It brings my attention into focus of a time I have only experienced in photography, fashion and literature. The indolic rawness in contrasting against the deepest, most red cherries jubilee roses that should have been a dessert named for it! I will always have a soft spot for Joy, but 1000 is easily my favorite. Previous posters are calling it a gender bender, and of course, to each their own! Their experiences may be different from mine. But to me, I find 1000 to be unabashedly feminine. I would love to acquire the vintage perfume in the green flacon, but fear if I don't act soon, it will only be a matter of time before it becomes out of reach. JOY was created with a lot of care, just like the most expensive Haute-Cotture dress, and thus it was extraordinary and timeless. It was presented by Jean Patou as \'the world\'s most expensive perfume\' right at the time of The Great Depression in 1929, when the market of luxury fashion crushed and Jean Patou\'s house could survive only through the perfumes.

This Grand Dame is an unapologetic indolic jasmine/rose/yilang floriental, emblematic of times when perfume actually smelled like perfume. I love Pandarapt's review below. I agree, this composition "is so pure and exact..." Even after IFRA reformulation, Joy EDP is fine perfumery that projects at arm's length for approximately 5-6 hours and can live as a skin scent up to 24 hrs. In my favourite perfumery, where I hadn't been in for a while (I'm pretty happy right now), a Joy sample was waiting for me. You can spray yourself generously with it, after only one sprayer the scent was in 10 minutes no longer to be guessed.Eau de Joy, while being from the '60's still has it going on. I don't believe I ever smelled it when it was first made, but what I am smelling now, many newer fragrance ((1990's an on), can't hold a candle to this beauty. Civet, which many here have voted as prominent, it is not prominent in this bottle. It doesn't turn animalic or skanky.

There's just a hint of powder too, and if you like that sort of thing, it's deliciously delightful. I happen to adore it. This is kind of disappointing. For the price, I really expected it to perform a lot better. I'm not really sorry I bought it, this in my mind is one every perfume lover should experience once in their lifetime, especially now that it's going out of production. We were disappointed by the name alone, not only by the classic "Joy" by Jean Patou, but also by the fact that the "J'adore in Joy" by Dior already exists. Nevertheless, there was still such a spark of hope that the scent might tear it out after all.I can't detect aldehydes or anything animalic here.on my skin it's all about a rich floral heaven in a golden sweet base, something like honey and champagne.among it's floral notes rose is the most prominent one to my nose.it's not an overly powdered, dusty rose.it's a sweet, bright and jammy rose.I can also smell ylang ylang but not much white florals, except something like magnolia Joy is one of those high French luxury products best pulled off ironically by les garces et les vilains. I suspect this was always true, even in the 30s. Who's zooming who? I mean really, the most obscenely expensive fragrance during a global depression. Degraded reformulated lux meets perfect vintage dimestore. Wear this on the barricades. Dorothy Day would have known what to do with this. LVMH, it's a sad day when you can't honour prestige French brands acquisitions. Mass marketing every fragrance will soon have the appeal of marketing Eurotrash. I fear, that day has already come. Any Niche brand can command prices twice that of a Dior fragrance (owned by LVMH) now. The grey market is filled with Dior fragrances, including Dior Joy. A side effect of mass marketing. This revolution of customers turning towards expensive Niche brands all happened under LVMH's watch. Arpege is an intimate fragrance for special occasions. After a while, the initial blast of aldehydes fades away, leaving a beautiful bouquet of flowers. With geranium and coriander providing a nice counterpoint, it is dominated by lily of the valley, jasmine, and rose. After three minutes, the scent suddenly disappeared, making me wonder if the olfactory system was disrupted by high-intensity indole.
