About this deal

The 512GB option is only available for the iPhone 11 Pro, and it comes at a serious hike in price from the base model. Most people won't need this much storage, and that's especially true if you plan to upgrade to the iPhone 12 in a year. All iOS 13 devices have better editing tools across photos and videos, offering control sliders for sharpness, noise reduction, definition and tint. Best of all, Live Photos will remain intact after your edits, giving you one less reason to open Adobe Lightroom. It’s become a familiar trope but it’s nonetheless true to state that if Apple hadn’t improved the speed of its iPhones in 2019, it wouldn’t have mattered one jot. Even a year on, the Apple A12 Bionic remains at the pinnacle of smartphone processor performance. It’s faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, the Kirin 980 and the Samsung Exynos 9820, all processors powering the fastest, and most expensive, Android phones around.

Hands up: I was wrong about the iPhone 11 Pro. Or at least, the design. When I first clapped eyes on it I instinctively didn’t like the look of the thing. That trio of camera lenses looked, to my eyes, awkward – ugly even – peering like some three-eyed Harry Potter out of the rear of the phone. AirDrop, AirPlay, Wi-Fi Hotspot, MIMO, WiFi-Calling (VoWiFi), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Dual Band Wi-Fi, NFC Dark mode in iOS 13 makes apps like Apple Music look very different (Image credit: Future) iOS 13, iOS 14, iOS 15 and performance With flight mode engaged and the display set to 170cd/m2 to ensure a consistent brightness across all phones we test, the iPhone 11 Pro lasted 17hrs 15mins before requiring a recharge. That’s four and a half hours longer than the iPhone Xs, which represents a significant 35% over last year’s phone. That’s not surprising given the battery has grown in capacity but it’s still welcome and brings the iPhone 11 Pro almost level with the Samsung Galaxy S10. It’s still no match for the Snapdragon 855-equipped phones we’ve seen recently, though, such as the Xiaomi Mi 9.Apple's minimalist camera app design means you're going to have to toggle between modes and options along the bottom of the app with a swipe up or down on the screen. It's unintuitive because you can only go one way: swipe down to display modes, and up for options. There's a tiny arrow at the top of the screen to hint at which way to swipe, but it's not very obvious. The front-facing selfie camera has also had an upgrade, with resolution upped to 12-megapixels from only seven. Apple has also added its very own version of night mode, which I’ll get onto below. All three cameras on the rear are capable of recording 4K video at 60fps.

Put to the test with our X-rite colour calibrator, the iPhone 11 Pro posted typically impressive numbers. In our sRGB calibration tests, it was pretty much spot on in terms of colour accuracy and gamut coverage; 98.3% gamut coverage and 103.9% gamut volume is pretty much as good as it gets and an average Delta E of 1.01 (the lower the better) is impeccable. Apple iPhone 11 Pro review: Performance Versions: A2215 (International); A2160 (USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands); A2217 (China, Hong Kong) Network All things considered, although the differences aren’t huge between the best phones on the market these days, I’d confidently say that Apple has pushed the iPhone 11 Pro to the top once again. It’s the most accomplished camera system in a smartphone today. Technically, Huawei’s Mate 30 triple-camera system is just as good, the fact that you can’t officially buy that phone in the UK or get Google Apps to work on it means it’s not a practical alternative. Plus it’s hugely expensive at€1,100. There is, however, no getting around the fact that the iPhone 11 Pro is a very good phone; a brilliant one, in fact. It looks a lot nicer than you think, and its cameras are beyond compare in all conditions. It shoots amazing video, and its battery life, while a long way from being the best, is a huge improvement on last year’s flagship iPhones. Impressive stuff but, scarily enough, it’s only set to get better when Apple’s AI-driven Deep Fusion low-light algorithms arrive later this year. Google’s soon-to-arrive Pixel 4 looks to have some very serious competition on its hands. The iPhone 11 Pro battery consistently lasted us more than a day during our testing, often stretching close to a day and a half, even with heavy use. When enabled, the iOS 13 low-power mode really extends the life of this battery.

The iPhone 11 Pro isn't here to wow you with an incredibly different design; it looks nearly identical to the iPhone XS before it and the iPhone X before that. But it’s the rest of the iPhone 11 Pro’s glass rear that proves ultimately persuasive, its matte finish beautifully smooth – a silky texture that feels like beach glass, ground smooth by years of tidal shift. Another nice addition here is the ability to have the camera capture images from the ultra-wide and primary cameras simultaneously. Then, if you go in and edit the photo, you can recompose and re-crop using the wider angle shot. Although he’s long-gone, Jony Ive’s influence can still be seen, hidden in the fine details. Each camera lens is framed boldly in stainless steel, seemingly perfectly positioned in space, each one equidistant from the other. And the camera bump itself is positioned in just the right place, too.The other two cameras are similar to last year. There’s a primary 12-megapixel f/1.8 camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and a field of view equivalent to a 26mm lens on a camera with a full-frame sensor. And, finally, there’s a 2x telephoto camera with a resolution of 12-megapixels, an aperture of f/2, OIS and a field of view equivalent to a 52mm lens on a camera with a full-frame sensor. It's an upgrade that'll make you think twice about needing an iPhone case, especially if you have the iPhone 11 Pro in Midnight Green. That's this year's hot new color that shows off the fact that you do indeed have the new iPhone for 2019. Apple's plastic clear case may be the best solution for that. Other colors include Space Grey, Silver, and Gold, and all look different from prior iPhones thanks to the matte finish. iOS 15 has also added FaceTime improvements, SharePlay, better notifications, a redesigned Safari, and quite a lot more. While Dolby Vision and HDR10 have been supported since the iPhone X, the library of HDR content has grown in the last two years. We're also treated to Dolby Atmos sound on the iPhone 11 Pro, simulating surround sound from the stereo speakers. This is great for those rare times you're not using your AirPods.

The iPhone 11 Pro was announced on September 12, 2019 and the official release date was later that month on September 20. It sells for Pro-level pricing, although in most regions, you're going to pay the same amount as you did for the iPhone XS and iPhone X. None of this is particularly innovative. There are plenty of other phones with three cameras on the rear. Some have more cameras than even this and others have greater telephoto reach. The Huawei P30 Pro’s telephoto camera, for instance, gives you 5x optical zoom. TrueDepth Camera - 12MP Camera, f/2.2 Aperture, Portrait Mode with Advanced Bokeh and Depth Control, Portrait Lighting with Six Effects (Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Stage Mono, High Key Mono), Animoji and Memoji, 4K Video Recording at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps, 1080p HD Video Recording at 30 fps or 60 fps, Slow-motion Video Support for 1080p at 120 fps, Next-generation Smart HDR for Photos, Extended Dynamic Range for Video at 30 fps, Cinematic Video Stabilisation(4K, 1080p and 720p), Wide Colour Capture for Photos and Live Photos, Retina Flash, Auto Image Stabilisation, Burst Mode Here's what we didn't like: the most obvious night mode button is at the top of the app with a fluctuating number visible, denoting long exposure time for current lightning conditions. Tap it and an intensity slider shows up along the bottom to change the exposure time. It requires enough thumb exercises that you'll be thankfully to have the smaller iPhone 11 Pro. There is a night mode button along the bottom – sometimes. It's only there when the options menu is displayed.Apple redesigned its iPhone camera app, surfacing options to take photos in the 16:9 aspect ratio along with 4:3 (normal) and square (formerly a dedicated mode you'd always accidentally find yourself in). This has made capturing photos for TechRadar in the 16:9 format infinitely easier without the need to crop in post. Great start.
