About this deal

Status — Participants were children aged 4–8 referred for treatment because of oppositional or conduct problems reported by their parents. Who benefits and how does It work? Moderators and mediators of outcome in an effectiveness Trial of a Parenting Intervention. Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology. 39(4), 568-580. Organized around the developmental baby stages of 0-3 months, 4-6 months and 6-12 months, the book provides simple but effective techniques to help you observe, read and learn about your babies' cues, signals and unique temperament: Cope with babies' crying and fussy periods, Baby-proof your home, Understand how babies learn from your responsive interactions, Speak "parent-ese," sing and read to your baby, provide optimal physical, tactile, auditory and visual stimulation, Begin to set up predictable routines and rituals, Learn strategies to keep your baby and yourself calm.

The authors used a public sector perspective when considering the cost effectiveness of the intervention, taking into account the cost of the intervention itself as well as the cost to the public sector. Using a collaborative and flexible approach, the intervention can be shaped by each parent to meet the needs of their own family. There was no difference in effectiveness by ethnicity, meaning that families of all ethnicities are equally likely to benefit from the intervention.

The high strength of evidence rating for this meta-analysis is based on having a large overall sample size and inclusion of only Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs). This study examined mediators and moderators of change in conduct problems, in a multi-agency randomized trial of The Incredible Years parenting program. Preschoolers at risk for conduct problems (n=153) were randomly assigned to intervention (n=104) and wait-list (n=49) groups. Boys and younger children, and those with more depressed mothers, tended to show greater improvement in conduct problems post-intervention. Other risk factors (i.e., teen or single parenthood, very low income, high initial levels of problem behavior) showed no predictive effects, implying intervention was at least as successful at helping the most disadvantaged families, compared to more advantaged. Mediator analyses found change in positive parenting skill predicted change in conduct problems. Limitations include the small sample size to conduct moderator and mediator analyses. The Incredible Years BASIC Parent Training Program targets parents of high-risk children and those displaying behavior problems.
