About this deal

I am a man who dreams of you, even if you don’t dream of me, and when you forget me and move on with your life, I will dream of you still.” The major plot points were good, although terribly rushed in the last third of the story. There was not enough build-up to make the plot twist/big reveal impactful, and instead it felt like whiplash. The ending was terribly anti-climactic, like everything was focused just to the left of where it should have been. There was too much filler fluff (drinking at bars, shopping with friends, visiting a haunted house, going bowling, riding a roller coaster--how does any of this advance the plot?!) and not enough plot or character development. I would say the same for the steamy scenes, that almost none of it encouraged relationship development or connection between Caius and Rory.

I think I liked Umbra King much more than I liked this book. I had a few months to hype up in my mind what this storyline would look like and it was just different than I expected. Rules were broken, exceptions were made, it was a long story but things were still too fast paced or just given easy solutions. There wasn't too much mystery, and the story took place in one week. I'll put it on my "middle of the road" shelf, fantasy elite tier for me are authors like SJM, Armentout, Roehrich, Kennedy, etc, and this just didn't compare with works like that. The Umbra will laugh before it uses its Shot of the Century ability. This can be used to tell when to use the Star Cannon. Sadness, fear, heartbreak, happiness, frustration. These are just a semblance of the emotions that Aeternum caused while I was reading it. The full rollercoaster effect. I needed to sit with this one for a few days the Umbra King was one of my top reads of 2022. So long story short, I loved it. The ending was bittersweet and sets up the next standalone novel perfectly. The Umbra King is book 1 in the Vincula Realm Duology and ends on a cliffhanger. Samyaza had me falling harder in this book than in the first & once I realized it, I was FREE FALLING. His personality & the way he is just hilarious without wanting to be is just, AH. I don't care if he is an intimidating gigantic angel, he is a SOFTIE DEEP DOWN & I love him for it. too many convenient reveals that didn't feel exciting, and twists that didn't make sense because they were not explained well. Read if you like strong morally gray women, men who simp for them, found family, forced proximity, and a hot enemies to lovers arc. As this did not happen, The Umbra did not return. However, the Mimic Umbra enemy could a reference to this.

Blighted • Boomer 1 • Necromancer 2 • Mystery 2 • Gravekeeper • Super Mystery • Ultra Mystery • Uber Mystery • Ninja • Frost Hero I feel like both Rory and Caius are broken in their own way and yet they complete each other. Their story is one of my favorites and I really am looking forward to what is to come. Also, the development of all relationships in this book was written extremely well. Seriously, the friendships, the found family, EVERYTHING! This book delivered on emotional damage and I am on my knees wanting someone like Caius. Just ready to rip the fabric of the world apart and do whatever needs to be done to be with you. And even though it takes a while for Caius and Rory to reunite, Ms. JAH does not disappoint with the spice... I think there was more dream sex than real sex but it was still 🔥🔥🔥

My major issue, and what caused me to DNF the book, was our main character Rory. First of all, her name is Aurora Raven. Do with that what you will (again with the YA feeling). Secondly, she was built up (and admittedly started) as a badass vigilante character hellbent on justice for her murdered sister. While she began the story along those lines, I became less and less convinced of her competency and intelligence as the book progressed. Also, if I have to read one more enemies-to-lovers book where the MC has an uncontrollable physical attraction to (what is to her) a literal murderer, I'll scream. STAND UPPPP! Am I not horny enough to understand the appeal of that concept?! I basically inhaled this book at the fastest speed my brain could comprehend the words my eyes were seeing. I practically read this in one sitting (probably would have definitely if I didn't start the book at midnight last night), which is quite an achievement for me at the moment since I have been going through quite a little bit of a slump and slowly getting out of it.
