About this deal

Nosing Doorly’s Fine Old Barbados Rum Aged 14 Years will be a familiar experience for anyone familiar with Foursquare rum. The aroma originally is very muted, distant, dominated by a focused sweet note - candied apples, marmalade, canned pumpkin, after adding a bit of water (the rum is bottled at 48 percent), the aroma slowly unfolds with more acrid, acidic notes of soft wood. the best i ve tried so far, in a rum the aroma/taste i appreciate the most is fruitiness and this one have it at maximum, more than mount gay (their rums where my preferred, no more), nose some alcohol burn (of course, it s warming at 48% ABV) but after this some vanilla and tons of tropical fruits, in the mouth tropical fruits are so present, yes, some wood and spices attenuate the (natural) sweetness and give some complexity, but fruits are so predominant ... Prvé ochutnanie – chuť je nie je taká sladká, ako by sa dalo z arómy vytušiť. Je tu jasne drevo, korenie (škorica?) a vanilka, celkovo je chuť silná a hrejivá. Došlo mi na um: „netreba veľa chutí, stačí tieto výrazné. Sú skvelé.“ Further sips seem to temper the more bitter and woody notes. More fruitiness becomes apparent. Once the palate adjusts the rum has a much better balance than the initial sip might lead you to believe. The extra ABV means this is a rum worth sitting down and spending some time with. Doorly’s XO you can almost swig straight from the bottle – you don’t want to do that with this. Sit down with it and appreciate it in small sips.

As mentioned above, Doorlys 14 Year Old Rum is a blend of pot still and column still rums, the pot still brings complexity, depth and weight to the blend whilst the column still brings a good balance or aroma and flavour. The rums are statically aged for a full 14 years in small American oak casks which leads to complex character with delicate aromas, something that only time can produce. There is also a small component aged for 14 years in ex Madeira wine casks, this brings some chocolate and marmalade character to final rum. The rums are blended and allowed to marry together for a period so the rums fully integrate, prior to bottling.Pure cane juice. To think that not so long ago, the Thai state was prohibiting any spirits bottled at above 40% vol. I also remember the first Chalong I tried really impressed me – at 40% vol. Colour: white wine. Nose: pure fermentary cane wine, vesou, pears, cherries, Jerusalem artichoke eau-de-vie (worth trying), varnish, diesel oil, drop of ammonia, lemon, even formic acid… May sound horrible but I just love all this. With water: rotting pineapples and bananas, that's just brilliant. Mouth: insane earthy cane, citrus, capers, tar… With water: immaculately salty. Oysters, olives, lime, lemon, grapefruit, yuzu, liquorice… Finish: long, incredibly clean, some total 'clear line spirit'. Comments: I'm not 100% sure I got the shochu part. Mea maxima Culpa. The rest I adored. Distilled at a small family-run distillery that makes some of the most popular rums in Barbados, every bottle of Foursquare Spiced Rum is a hand-crafted blend of fresh nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and the distiller’s art. Refreshingly smooth on ice, Foursquare Spiced doesn’t contain the added sugar cane syrup commonly found in many other spiced rums. Foursquare Spiced Rum is an aged rum with hints of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg gently blended in at the distillery. The actual recipe is a family secret passed down through five generations. It is bottled in Hand Crafted European glass bottles with a hand dipped wax seal. The Rum heralds from Barbados – the island where rum was born.

Finish: Warming. Lots of grip that lingers long. Pimento and green tea. Liquorice and bitter dark chocolate. This complex release has been crafted from a complex maturation bill. A three year old ex-bourbon cask Rum was then matured for a further eleven years in old, refill sherry casks. This dual maturation was then further blended with a fourteen year old ex-bourbon cask matured Rum. Presented at 62% ABV, this stunning Rum continues to reflect the excellent work that the award-winning team at Foursquare Distillery are known for. When all is said and done this is another beautifully balanced rum – there is enough variety in all the Foursquare releases to recommend purchasing at least one bottle of everything they put out. Differences from the rest of the Doorly’s range come with the new box (as pictured) which is an improvement on the box used for the Doorly’s 12. The box can now act as a total cover for the rum but can also be used to present the rum. Should you wish to do such a thing.Depaz is good rum. Colour: gold. Nose: very aromatic, very much on cane syrup and just cane juice, then moist marzipan (with rum inside) and a combo maple syrup + manuka honey. Some earthy incense then, ylang-ylang, lilies of the valley, a little menthol, half a glass of sauternes… Indeed, it is extremely aromatic, but it would never get heady. Mouth: very amusing arrival, with an unusual spicy earthiness, rather a lot of cinnamon (raw and as liqueur), ripe pineapple, liquorice, gewurztraminer and sauternes, lichees, a little caramel…. In a way, there's so much happening that you would believe it was a good idea to keep it a 41% vol. Finish: medium, on similar notes of incense, oranges, sweet white wine, honey, rose pastries, Turkish delights… Caramel and fudge in the aftertaste. Comments: really a lot happening. Probably the most boisterous side of agricole. Having said that, you can have Depaz at 55% vol. too. Takže chuťové poháriky boli riadne rozohriate a na 48% silu pripravené (už Doorly’s XO a 12 sú 43% destiláty). Pred ochutnávaním silnejších rumov rozhodne odporúčam najprv pripraviť telo niečím slabším. V súčasnosti vyrába rumy Doorly’s pálenica Foursquare a sú najdôležitejšími z celej produkcie. Tú postavil v roku 1996 sir David Seale a dnes ju riadi jeho syn Richard. V konkurenčnom boji sa drží autenticity, takže do rumov nepridáva cukor (doslova 0 g/l), umelé aditíva ani arómy.

Po druhom ochutnaní je jasné, že chutí je tu ďaleko viac. Pridávajú sa zázvor, čerešne, jablká, melasa, kokos. V chuti nájdete ovocnú sladkosť, aj drevitú suchosť. Rozhodne zaujímavý zážitok z pitia. Verím že pri ďalšom ochutnaní by sa našli aj ďalšie kombinácie chutí. Doorly’s Fine Old Barbados Rum Aged 14 Years. This release, unlike the Exceptional Cask Series (Empery and 2007 to follow) and the Velier collaborations (Patrimonio will also follow soon here) will be available as a constant addition to the Foursquare portfolio. Doorlys 14 Year Old Rum is a premium Barbados rum. It is produced at the Foursquare Distillery and is the oldest permanent rum in their range. It is Single Blended Rum, a blend of pot and column still rum that have been aged in ex-Bourbon and ex-Madeira Cask. Let me please remind you that my humble assessments of any spirits are done from the point of view of a malt whisky enthusiast who, what's more, is aboslutely not an expert in rum, brandy, tequila, vodka, gin or any other spirits. The finish is warming, long, delicate, only slightly astringent and bitter, but almost feminine and soft in intensity. Handcrafted by Master Distiller and all-round hero Richard Seale using a blend of column and pot still rums that have matured for at least 14 years in ex-Bourbon barrels. It offers phenomenal value for money especially considering that a 14-year-old spirit matured in a tropical climate displays an equivalent development that might take nearer 30 years in Europe. Rums from Foursquare contain no flavourings or added sugar this one just has a little caramel to restore the cask colouring after dilution to 48% and a small portion of the blend was matured in ex-Madeira casks giving a wonderful natural sweetness and richness. There’s also more tropical fruits than a Carmen Miranda headpiece the nostalgia of toffee apples ginger beer and chocolate orange plus hedgerow berry jam cinnamon smoking barbeque embers vanilla mulled wine summer pudding and marmalade. Sip this slowly lovingly and neat. We can imagine distilleries that would build barrel pools, all filled with saltwater to various degrees. Honestly, I've also tasted submerged wines, and it wasn't great. But this is something else, especially if you like salted liquorice. Let's move on...

when i hear people speaking of bajan rums being the best, i confirm that they really are the cream of the cream of rum (and this one is a true bajan with a pedigree), people who like sweetened rum please don t drink this just to rate it bad ! Ak nie ste zvyknutí na silnejšie rumy, tak po ponorení nosa do pohára jasne pocítite jemne štipľavú silu 48%. V aróme dominujú citrusy a drevo, ja vnímam aj znaky pomarančovej kôry, sladký karamel a tradične (ako aj v ostatných Doorly’s rumoch) vanilku. Akonáhle ho ovoniate, je vám hneď jasné, že o chvíľku ochutnáte niečo veľmi zaujímavé. Keď som rum degustoval druhýkrát (a priznávam, čítal som si aj desiatky recenzií, aby som v tom mal úplne jasno), vo vôni už poznávam aj tak často ospevovanú kombináciu laku a lepidla (poznámka pre začiatočníkov – netreba sa toho báť). Tie vo chvíli zmiznú a okrem zmienených vôní z prvej degustácie cítim aj zelené jablká, melón, hrušky, korenie či škoricu. 48% sila destilátu umožňuje divoký rozsah skutočne rozličných vôní. We sampled Doorly's 14, and I immediately loved it; I have a big soft spot for madeira-finished rum. My girlfriend and I later sampled other products at the tasting bar on the Foursquare premises, which also included the 14 year; I made sure to grab a bottle from their available selection to support the distillery directly. So my particular bottle isn't just an exclusive bottling or the oldest in the brand's lineup, but also a special souvenir. With so many recent releases comparisons will be sought. I find both this and Doorly’s 12 to be slightly more “wood driven” than some of the Exceptional Cask series. This is for example more woody than the very Fruity Premise of Zinfandel Cask rums. More oak and less vanilla and sweet fruit. Doorly's 14 year is a more recent addition to the Doorly's line, and also the oldest expression. It is currently exported to Europe, but otherwise only available from either the distillery or another bottle shop on Barbados itself.Doorly’s 14-year-old is a blend of Pot and Column distilled rums, some of which has been aged for fourteen years in ex-Bourbon American white oak barrels, and another portion aged for the same length of time in ex-Madeira casks.
