About this deal

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh was first released on VHS, Betamax, CED video record, and laser disc in the early 1980s. It was re-released on VHS on March 27, 1996 as part of the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection series and included video footage of the making which was shown before the film starts. The menus are animated, and are accompanied by music from the movie. Very nicely done, and in the spirit of the film. Voice Cast: Sterling Holloway (Winnie the Pooh), Paul Winchell (Tigger), Junius Matthews (Rabbit), John Fiedler (Piglet), Ralph Wright (Eeyore), Barbara Luddy (Kanga), Clint Howard (Roo), Howard Morris (Gopher), Hal Smith (Owl) This easy-going innocence brings Pooh closer to childhood than any other Disney film. An interrogation of the youthful imagination, the film connects to the most enduring hope of our formative years: that all is right in the world. This is complemented by animation that presents a bright and sunny landscape populated by characters colorful in both appearance and personality. Also effective to this end are the voices that are perfectly matched with each character to make them instantly lovable. The many songs written for the featurettes by the legendary Sherman Brothers emulate Winnie the Pooh's instantly appealing, carefree effervescence. The resulting warmth of all this gives the movie tremendous power. Toy Story (1995) • A Bug's Life (1998) • Toy Story 2 (1999) • Monsters, Inc. Pooh's Heffalump Movie: " Little Mr. Roo" • " The Horribly Hazardous Heffalumps" • " The Name Game" • " Shoulder to Shoulder" • " In the Name of the Hundred Acre Wood/What Do You Do?" Set in the Hundred Acre Wood, the Pooh stories take place entirely within the imagination of Christopher Robin, a young English boy who is just on the cusp of having to grow up. In his fantasy, his stuffed dolls come to life for various adventures. Of all his toy animals, the stuffed bear named Winnie the Pooh, with little common sense and an affinity for honey, is his closest friend. Joining him are the shy but eager-to-assist Piglet, the easily agitated Rabbit, the exuberantly bouncy Tigger, the gloomy Eeyore, the wise and full-of-himself Owl, the fast-talking Gopher (native to the Disney adaptation), the maternal Kanga and her adventurous young son Roo. The film marks the first and final appearance of actors Junius Matthews ( Rabbit), Barbara Luddy ( Kanga), Sterling Holloway ( Winnie the Pooh), and Sebastian Cabot ( The Narrator). Thousands of parents can also attest that it's a certain winner for the kiddies, maintaining family values without worry. This DVD shows our wonderful fluffy Poohbear in three vignette adventures. He's joined by Christopher Robin, that crabby ol' Rabbit, loveable Piglet and bouncy Tigger, as well as his other 100 Acre Wood friends. The film's content comes largely from the three previously released animated featurettes Disney produced based upon the Winnie-the-Pooh books by A. A. Milne: Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966), Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day (1968), and Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too! (1974). Extra material with Holloway and Cabot reprising their roles used to link the three featurettes together was added to allow the stories to flow into each other. The part where Roo and Tigger jump out of a tree in winter in the film and not in winter in the original stories.

The "Friendship Edition" DVD was re-released on June 19, 2007. All of the special features from the previous "25th Anniversary Edition" DVD were recycled; the only new addition being an episode of Playhouse Disney's computer-animated series My Friends Tigger & Pooh. The DVD re-release coincides with the 30th anniversary of the release of the film.Piglet's Big Movie (2003) • Pooh's Heffalump Movie (2005) • Sing a Song with Pooh Bear and Piglet Too (2003) Inside the case is an insert that provides the chapter index (and breaks it down by each featurette) and advertises upcoming Playhouse Disney DVD releases. There's good and bad when discussing the digital restoration that's taken place here. 'The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' spans almost a decade of animation, so each short, no doubt, presented its own challenges. As the movie opens in the live-action credit scene you'll notice very visible noise reduction taking place. Frozen grain hangs over the entire picture as the camera pans and the credits roll. The live-action scenes, which only comprise a couple minutes of the whole presentation, don't look all that great. They look flat and digitally altered. Here's the thing though. We can go on and on about how much 'The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' means to animated history. How great it is to have a compilation of shorts that comprise something that Disney himself partly influenced before his passing. That's all perfectly logical to discuss. Yet, with that said, the fact that Winnie the Pooh and his stuffed friends are as relevant with young kids today as they've ever been is reason enough to heap on the praise.

There's a music video (2:34) by Carly Simon, who pulls out her acoustic guitar to give a stripped down performance of the "Winnie the Pooh" theme. It's a nice take on the song and the video, which mixes live-action and animation, is nicely made as well. After that is a 2-minute sing-along for an extended version of "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers", comprised of animation from the '80s Pooh TV series and featuring subtitles for most (though frustratingly not all) of the song. Dumbo: Big Top Edition (1941) • 101 Dalmatians (1961) • Lady and the Tramp: Platinum Edition (1955) Ruth Hill Viguers, however, when writing in A Critical History of Children’s Literature during the 1960s, mentioned Disney’s Winnie the Pooh along with several other Disney adaptations as having "destroyed the integrity of the original books". The "Friendship Edition" VHS and DVD was re-released on June 19, 2007. The DVD re-release included the only bonus feature which was an episode of Playhouse Disney’s computer-animated series The Book of Pooh. The VHS and DVD re-release coincides with the 30th anniversary of the release of the film.Tigger, a stuffed tiger in the Hundred Acre Wood who always love to run and bounce. voiced by Paul Winchell. Eeyore, a stuffed donkey in the Hundred Acre Wood who always loses his tail and talks with a deep depressing voice and tone. Voiced by Ralph Wright. In lieu of an audio commentary, "Pooh's Pop-Up Fun Facts" has been carried over from the old DVD as well. This plays the movie from beginning to end with various bits of trivia appearing on the screen in subtitle form throughout. This format is just about the worst way to present information, as the viewer must keep their eyes nervously glued to the screen in fear of missing something. It's difficult to concentrate on either the movie or the trivia and nearly impossibly to do both. The trivia varies from the obvious to the interesting and comes in spurts, with long gaps of no text in between. It's better than nothing and a good thing that it wasn't left off altogether (as the press release had suggested), but some improvement or an audio commentary would have been preferred. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh' is important. The film -- a collection of featurettes -- is a cherished production in Disney's illustrious vault, not just because it introduced the world to the animated versions of A. A. Milne's lovable characters, but also because this was one of the last productions that Walt Disney himself influenced before his untimely death in 1966.

The Dutch dub uses an alternate opening score and theme from Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore in 1983.Film critic, Leonard Maltin, calls the movie a gem. However, Friz Freleng says the funniest Walt Disney adaptations are based on the books The film has a 91% fresh rating in Rotten Tomatoes. Hundred Acre Wood • Pooh's House • Piglet's House • Tigger's House • Rabbit's House • Eeyore's House • Owl's House • Rabbit's Garden • Christopher Robin's Room • Skull Cave • North Pole • Gopher's Tunnels • Heffalump Hollow • The Scary Woods AUDIO: The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix mostly stays in the front speakers, and comfortably so. The narration and character dialogue is all clear and easy-to-understand. The wonderful songs, written by the Sherman Brothers (who collaborated on many successful Disney scores from the '60s including The Parent Trap and Mary Poppins) are lively enough, as is the low-key but oft-running score, which encompasses a number of instruments. This isn't an adventure-and-effects film, and both the video and audio serve the film flawlessly.
