Usually I’m not a fan of books I have to break out the dictionary for. There is nothing more pretentious and annoying than an author lording obscure words over the reader. However, in this case the over-educated feel to the narration fits perfectly with the personality of our main character and narrator. In an excellent example of form following function, Barnes does a great job of ensuring that Paul’s temperament and his love of words serve the plot well. The old moon asks them where they are going and what they wish for, to which the three reply that they have come to fish for the herring fish. The old moon then sings a song as they sail, and the wind helps them through the night. I want to conclude, however, in stressing the magnitude of this achievement (the Edict of Nantes). When we recognize the power of the forces still working against a religious settlement, we can better understand that we must celebrate even the limited and grudging toleration mandated by the Edict of Nantes. It allowed the Huguenot communities a necessary respite, a period of time whose very uncertainty encouraged them to nurture deeply those religious values and traditions that permitted the Reformed Church’s survival through the years under the cross. The factor is where The Bible is concern Adam and Eve were the only people on Earth Cain and Abel there Sister were born after the Fall of People (Adam in Hebrew means PEOPLE), in Eden.

Nod takes place in Vancouver, Canada and follows the lives of Tanya and her husband Paul, an etymologist and writer, who is one of the rare Sleepers. Paul is the novel’s narrator. Early on in Nod, Tanya, an Awaker, desperate for sleep as anyone would be after several days of watching the moon make its slow crawl across the sky, demands sex from Paul, because she hopes that will get her to sleep. Tanya and Paul’s touching is coarse, brutal, and primitive, setting the stage for the rest of the novel.

Gripping. Exceptional. Readers will be compelled to continue through to the end of this disturbing, spellbinding journey.” Gothic with a drawling sense of Southern style, this haunting and lyrical literary treasure lingers like a moving old memory long after the story is put down.
