It won't waste electricity, thanks to the voice and motion activated sensors, and it couldn't be more easy to use with the touch screen navigation. Because of this, it would suit those who are new or experienced with this kind of product.If you want a digital photo frame that can form part of your connected abode and allow you to control other devices within it, consider one of these. Choosing a digital photo frame is fairly easy: work out your budget then decide what size you need and whether you’re willing to pay for extra features or Wi-Fi connectivity. How much do you want to spend? And how big a frame do you want? Similarly, while many digital photo frames take the form of generic rectangles with bevelled bezels, certain models offer a fresh take on the photo frame. The Facebook Portal, for example, offers a floating box frame effect, while the minimalist Aura Mason uses a subtly sculpted finish to great effect. Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen): The best smart display for photos It’s worth thinking about whether you need a model with an adjustable tilt angle, especially if you’ll be placing the frame on a higher shelf. It also pays to consider the frame’s physical footprint: certain frames require a fair amount of shelf space for the stand behind, while others – such as the freestanding Aura Mason – occupy only the slim width of the frame itself.The frame has built-in speakers for videos with sound, and the volume can also be adjusted with the remote control. This is a function we didn't use, although we struggled to see the appeal of it, as it probably wouldn't be something we would normally look for in a photo frame. A clear user interface is helpful here, making it easy to get photos on the device, add them to playlists and control how they look. How much do I need to spend? Not all digital photo frames are equally good. While most digital frames now use IPS technology, which give you brighter colours and wider viewing angles than the old, dull TN LCD screens, the quality still varies. Some cheaper models give you brash, over-saturated colours and struggle to deliver natural tones. They can’t cover the full depth of shades and colours that your camera captured when you took the shot. In fact, few photo frames can match the colour accuracy of a high-end laptop screen or tablet, but this shouldn’t be something you can spot at a glance.

The time periods and options vary from frame to frame and, on certain models – the Facebook Portal, for example – the setting cannot be disabled, meaning the frame will automatically sleep after an hour. Even without motion sensors – or with the sensors disabled – most models include some form of sleep timer, which will see the frame switch itself off after a set amount of time. Some also have in-built ambient light sensors, which are used to control the automatic brightness and, in the case of the Aura Mason, switch off the display when it gets dark.
There's no doubt the digital frame looks impressive when you get it out of the box. With a resolution of 2048 x 1536 on its 2k screen sealed within a 9.7-inch frame, its quality can only be described as outstanding. That's why it's earned the Tom's Guide 2022 Award for Best digital photo frame. Colors couldn’t be more vibrant or realistic and coupled with its two touch bar controls, the operation of this frame is as intuitive as it gets. True, there’s no touchscreen, but that only saves the screen from oily fingerprints obstructing the view in our opinion. The interface also lets you invite friends to upload images to your frame, change brightness and volume levels, schedule the frame on and off, and set up parameters for viewing slideshows and onscreen EXIF info for each image. We tested the Premium version of the frame, which features four hours of battery life, as opposed to the standard version, which you must keep plugged in.
