I wouldn't necessarily class this as a psychological thriller, but it definitely is a suspenseful thriller. I did wonder if people would like a second book. I started writing it and at that time I was messaged by a publishing house and asked me if I had any further work to show them. I was stunned as that is very rare for that to happen as I didn’t have an agent. I found an agent with Darley Anderson Literary Film and TV Agency and here we are.” Definitely would recommend this to fans of the psychological thriller.... was it the best I’ve ever read? no, but it was pretty darn good!

DISCLOSURE: Thank you to author Lynda Renham and Raucous Publishing for providing a digital ARC of The Lies She Told for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. Finally, it does not ramp up suspense to have your main character suspect everyone! The constant wondering if Bob (?) the real estate guy still has a key and why would he need it and maybe he used it to get in is just dumb. And the guy who plays games online late at night is predisposed to being a criminal? Really?? As the two stories begin weaving in and out, readers learn there are common things occurring in both, leaving us to question which one is real and which one is a story. Or perhaps... it's all the same story happening from different perspectives. You don't really know until the last few chapters when the random clues begin fitting together, revealing what has actually been happening along the path. I think the author does have an ability to write; I’m not sure if she rushed this book, got carried away with a silly idea or just didn’t care (especially towards the end), but if she is going to write any more books she really needs to take her time on it and think about the plot, style and the characters. This strikes me as a first draft based on a runaway idea that got out of hand and she didn’t know when to stop with the ridiculous plot! Leave it to Denise to take me on an emotional roller coaster as I adventure through the Carly Moore series! The Lies She Told was absolutely AMAZING!!! Coming off the low of Buried in Secrets, I was worried about how the rest of the series would play out, but never underestimate Denise! She has once again turned things around for me and left me wanting and NEEDING to know what is going to happen next!! From the author of the USA Today–bestselling novel The Widower’s Wife, comes an electrifying story of love and deceit, where the truth can be darker than fiction.

Beth recognizes her new partner, as having a drinking problem, and mentions this to the Chief. The Chief tells Beth that Tom had been transferred from London to a quieter division with less pressure. Beth is fuming because she could have applied for Tom’s job, but didn’t because she had a few problems in her personal life.Neither Liza or Beth were terribly likable, however I found them very sympathetic and real.... The twists and turns in this book were wild and took you on quite the crazy ride! Somethings I saw coming while others I definitely did not.... The ending was so well done and very plausible(Always a bonus).... If there’s one thing I like doing it’s discovering new authors. Catherine Yaffe is certainly a new author for me. Catherine’s debut novel is ‘The Lie She Told’ which was released on 27th September 2020. May I just say ‘The Lie She Told’ is a fantastic debut novel, which I thoroughly enjoyed but more about that in a bit. Don't worry, Cate Holahan (the REAL author of this book) has expertly written a parallel story universe that exists between Liza and Beth. You have to stay on your tippy toes to keep up with this mystery, don't miss any details, everything is a clue! Wowza!! Guys, this is a September Book of the Month Club selection! And it's so good. An old fashioned great mystery. I love it!

Using her writing as an escape from all of life's stresses at the moment Liza throws herself into her book and her new character, Beth. Beth is a new mom who has been home alone caring for her newborn while her husband claims to be working all kinds of hours at his job. Out on a walk one day Beth decides to drop in on her husband at work and instead sees him at a nearby restaurant with another woman. The Lies She Told is a compelling thriller that is told from various points of view and different time periods. Our main characters DS Beth Harper and DI Tom Miller don’t exactly see eye to eye. Kate dislikes Tom even with the issues surrounding the death of his wife. Tom knows Beth doesn’t like him and you get the feeling at times he enjoys making her have to work with him. I have never read Cate Holahan before. She is a young author and based on this newest novel of hers, she is going to have a long successful career. She is brilliant and I want to be in her head again soon! The fifth installment, has a little bit of everything. Romance, murder, mystery, and comedy. I laughed so hard several times while reading. I absolutely loved seeing more of Hank in this installment and I still love that old man. He’s like a big ole teddy bear. Marco melted my heart as well!! As Beth has grown up in this village, she knows the victim, as well as most other residents, quite well. Talking to her family, friends, neighbors, Harper and Miller learn nothing about any kind of a motive. Any suspect was immediately looked at, but all their alibis seem to be aboveboard. I hope we get to read more of Detective Tom Miller and Beth Harper. They make a great team and I loved the village setting of Stonesend. The concept of the book is great. I love trying to solve not only the mystery within the novel, but also determining how the two stories would eventually link together and which was fake. I enjoy seeing parallels between the two lead characters and their families. The emotional aspects of the characters are strong and offer readers an easy connection. You can understand the pain and feel the impact of the actions happening around them. It's full of suspense, some very descriptive scenes and lots of potential suspects and angles. Many thanks to Crooked Lane Books of New York for sending a beautiful complimentary copy of Cate Holahan's upcoming new novel in exchange for an honest review.

The writing felt stilted to me, in a way that came across as void of emotion, unsubtle, inauthentic. It made it difficult to take it too seriously; in a way it reminded me of certain 1930 gangster movies, a bit cheesy. This was a well-written crime thriller, with well-developed characters and gripping plot. Even though I guessed the culprit, half way through the novel, it did not take away my enjoyment of the novel. I can only hope that this is the start of a new series, so I can touch base with the characters again. Highly recommended! I feel like the growth that Carly has gone through is really shown in this book. While she's still the bada** that we've come to love, we also get to see her vulnerable side in this book. There are quite a few moments where she really starts to doubt the things she's doing/has done and who can't relate to that? This book has a little bit of everything that we've come to love about DGS - romance, suspense, comedy, and mystery. The love between Carly and Hank makes me smile. :) There are some pretty big twists and I did manage to guess them but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the book as it was masterfully written with the right tone and pace. The characters are well developed and the importance of the past for the police and their suspects is very engaging. I enjoyed the story. It was engaging and easy to read. It kept me on my toes, wondering what the titular lie was that forced Kate into a new life with her son. And although I thought Kate was a bit wishy-washy and naive at times, I still wanted her to have a happy, new life.I really enjoyed this book not your obvious psychological thriller as alot of the plot is set out for us however it was interesting to find out what the motivation was behind both Kate and Ryan. Hilary, our main character, is beyond a realistic portrayal of paranoid for something like what she's hiding. I suspected instantly what the secret was, just based on her initial memories of high school and pranks. She was part of a mean girl clique and pranked the wrong person who then committed suicide. YAWN However, there are some minor plots which felt unresolved. For instance, why did Ryan resent Len so much? We don’t get much details on their past relationship. Moreover, l wished I liked Kate as the story continued, but she was weak and selfish. Firstly, thank you so much Paula for this ebook in exchange for an honest review on your debut novel.
