About this deal

For those who want a wireless version, look no further than the Retro-Bit Tribute 64. Although the layout and design is more-similar to the GameCube controller, it has a nice feel to it. Highly compatible with almost every platform, you really can’t go wrong. It’s even accepted to use with Switch and the original N64. Unfortunately, it’s over twice the price of any of the wired-versions. Its battery life is a bit shorter than that of the Brawler64 Wireless and comes in at around 6 hours maximum and charges using Micro-USB. A variant of the N64 controller made specifically for the Nintendo Switch was released in October 2021. This particular model has built-in vibration motors and have USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Retro-Bit makes some very high quality products and their Tribute 64 controller is no exception. They have multiple versions of this controller, one that can be used with the original Nintendo 64 console and another version that can be used with the PC, Switch, macOS, and Raspberry Pi.

How does it compare to the official NSO pad during gameplay?

The best thing about the controller was that it seemed perfectly designed for the games released on the N64 console. Nintendo have always been good at making hardware and software which feel as if they're working hand in glove (except for the Nintendo Power Glove). I've played Mario 64 with several different controllers since, and it has never felt as good when not on an N64 pad. It therefore makes perfect sense that Nintendo want to recreate the controller so people can play those old classics as originally intended.

But aren't those games going to be designed for more modern pads," I pretend I can hear you say. Sure, but this new N64 controller being an official Nintendo release all but guarantees it'll be adequately supported one way or another. The Retro Fighters Brawler64 is another wireless option. However, it’s said to have some compatibility issues with Mac users. We really like the layout of it. Fortunately, it’s fully updateable via USB so upcoming patches may fix these issues. Holding the end product in hand simply felt wonderful. The controller synched to my Switch seamlessly and is actually recognised as an N64 controller, as if it were an official NSO one. All the UI quirks and button configurations work as they should. Latency and battery life are on par with the official pad — around 8 hours — with the only downside being that buttons can’t be remapped on Switch (unless you do so at a system level). Either way, all the options on this list are great choices and you won’t be disappointed no matter which you choose. Frequently Asked Questions What is the best controller to play N64 emulators? In addition, it does not work with online play; it’s ideal for emulation.

After setting up your controller, you should be able to use it to play N64 games in Project64. Some games may have unique controls, so you may need to experiment with different button configurations to find the one that works best for you. The SAFFUN N64 Wired USB Controller is very popular. You know what’s often better than playing your retro game on an old retro console and tiny CRT TV? Playing it on a high-powered, big screen PC through a really good emulator! As the above-quoted interview states, the original Nintendo 64 controller’s design was mainly modelled for the Mario 64 game mechanics. It wasn’t, of course, made for just one game, but while designing it, the developers had Mario 64 in mind. That's not where my interests lie, however. I have very little appetite for playing Ocarina Of Time again. I imagine there are some emulation enthusiasts who feel differently, but that's not me. This design was quite controversial, as some games ended up using too many buttons, forcing the player to keep moving their hands around the controller, or using buttons for a function that hadn’t been designed. Despite that, the original Nintendo 64 controller became one of the most popular and best-known gaming controllers in modern history. But I was not going to let that stop me from playing classic N64 games on my Switch using the controller they were intended for. Though its unconventional design has long divided opinion, the original controller is for me the only way to play these games. That preference is informed both by '90s kid nostalgia and how unnatural it feels playing these titles on any other controller.
